More Detail:
SUPERMAN AND LOIS is a science fiction superhero drama on The CW. In the series finale, Lex Luthor wages an all-out assault against Superman. With Smallville on the brink of ruin, Superman and his two sons struggle against Luthor’s indestructible war suit. Meanwhile, Lois prepares a story to expose Luthor’s evil scheme to the world. Will the Kent family be able to save Smallville in time?
In Season Four, Episode 10, “It Went by So Fast,” Superman and his family have caught on to Lex Luthor’s secret plan to conquer Smallville. In response, Luthor unleashes a monster to ravage the rural town. Clark Kent, alongside his superpowered sons Jonathan and Jordan, intercepts the beast. Meanwhile, Lois Lane and her civilian allies gather enough evidence to expose Luthor’s plans. The team runs a live internet stream, but Luthor’s tech experts block it. With the situation growing even more desperate, Luthor dons his “Iron Man” suit and vows to take Superman out personally. Will the Kent family be able to save Smallville?
“It Went By So Fast” ends on a high note. The cinematography is great, and the acting of the Kent family is excellent. However, there are a few minor blemishes. First, the quality of the visual effects is sometimes inconsistent. When the characters fight on the ground, the effects look great. However, Lex Luthor’s metal suit has poor lighting and sticks out like a sore thumb. As seen on other CW series like THE FLASH, the “flying” sequences range from convincing to “college play” quality.
Secondly, the romantic subplot between Smallville’s female mayor and a military tech expert falls a little flat. This side story sometimes has little emotional depth. These two characters get married in the epilogue, but they distract from the core bond between Clark and Lois Kent. However, these issues don’t detract from the episode’s exciting action and uplifting, inspiring values.
For example, Clark Kent aka Superman is a strong father figure who values justice, humility and family. He has a stable marriage, guides his sons to do the right thing, and vows to protect his neighbors. After the climactic battle, the residents of Smallville host a marriage ceremony between the mayor and her boyfriend, who’s been helping Superman fight the bad guys. In the epilogue, Clark Kent offers forgiveness to a villain. Lastly, the Kent family runs several Smallville charities to help improve the lives of their small-town community.
The best part of this finale is how it concludes Clark Kent’s emotional journey. Throughout the series, Clark has struggled to balance his duties of being a hero and raising his teenage sons. This episode solidifies Clark’s maturity in trusting his family, learning from his past mistakes in parenting, and leaving a worthy legacy behind. As Clark Kent and Superman, Tyler Hoechlin is superb, balancing his “stoic hero” side with his more friendly demeanor. In the final scene, Kent passes away from natural causes and enters the afterlife. Instead of feeling regret, he experiences joy from improving the lives of his friends and family. At the last minute, he reunites with his wife in the afterlife. “Find love,” he says in a voiceover. “It’s the only thing that makes life worth living.”
The final episode of SUPERMAN AND LOIS is a satisfying ending to an uplifting show. However, there is moderate action violence and brief foul language. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises some caution for older children.
