What You Need To Know:

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION presents another set of adventures where an elite fighting force saves the world. After a brief intro, the G.I. Joe force goes to Pakistan to reclaim a rogue nuclear missile and a suitcase carrying Pakistan’s nuclear launch codes. When preparing to leave, they get ambushed and many are killed by the United States government. It turns out that the U.S. President has been secretly kidnapped and replaced by the leader of Cobra, an international terrorist group. The three remaining G.I. Joe’s return to America to find out what happened and stop the bad guys.

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION is a loud, disjointed and disappointing action movie, with an incoherent screenplay and incompetent direction. Terrible 3D effects render it nearly unwatchable in many fight scenes. The action becomes a blur. Also, the storyline jumps from one loud and incomprehensible action sequence to another. Finally, most of the performances are lazy. G.I. JOE: RETALIATION does have a strong moral, patriotic worldview. However, even that’s undercut by a high body count and a brief reference to a vague, politically correct deity or god.

Content:

(BB, PP, ACAC, Pa, PC, FR, L, VV, M) Strong moral, patriotic, anti-statist or anti-totalitarian government worldview in loud, disjointed action movie, including several jokes made at the Communist dictatorship of North Korea’s expense, undercut by a brief syncretistic pagan reference to a vague multicultural, politically correct “deity”; seven relatively light obscenities includes five “h” words and two “a” words, but with a hard-to-hear strong profanity, plus an obscene gesture; wall-to-wall action violence with no blood includes punching, kicking, beatings, shootings, bombings, explosions, and swordfights including a major villain being stabbed through the chest with a sword, multiple vehicular fights and chases, the world’s nuclear missile supply is launched with impending destruction of the planet until leaders self-destruct the missiles, London is impressively leveled by another form of bomb hitting it, and head villain pretends to be the U.S. President and tries to dupe the world’s leaders into destroying their nuclear weapons in order for him to control them and rule the world; no sex; no nudity but woman seen in her underwear from afar; no alcohol; no smoking or drugs; and, the villains kidnap the President of the United States, replace him and try to frame the good guys.

More Detail:

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION is a loud, disjointed and disappointing action movie with an utterly incoherent screenplay and incompetent direction. It has a strong moral, patriotic worldview, but even that’s undercut by a brief reference to a vague, politically correct deity or god.

The movie presents another set of adventures in which an elite fighting force saves the USA and the world from an evil terrorist organization. It opens with the G.I. Joe force being an international elite fighting force rather than the all-American hero that the character started decades ago. They free a prisoner in North Korea and discover another flag hanging there that’s linked to the evil terrorist organization, Cobra.

Within moments, they are in Pakistan to reclaim a rogue nuclear missile and a suitcase carrying that nation’s nuclear launch codes. However, when they are preparing to leave with the missile, they get ambushed and many are killed by an attack from the United States government. It turns out that the U.S. President has been secretly kidnapped and replaced by the Cobra leader wearing a mask, and he has ordered their deaths.

Only three G.I. Joe’s survive. Led by Roadblock (played by Dwayne Johnson), they return to America to uncover why the ambush occurred and what happened to the president. They team up with an elite Asian fighting force and an unfairly ousted American general (played by Bruce Willis) to bring down Cobra and save the world.

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION should have been a great entertainment for teenagers and adults, with its patriotic heart in the right place and an appealing cast of action stars teaming up to save the world. However, the fact that it has terrible 3D effects throughout renders it nearly unwatchable in many fight scenes. Thus, the punching and kicking becomes a headache-inducing blur. Also, the storyline jumps constantly from one loud and incomprehensible action sequence to another. Also, the limited dialogue is heavy on lame jokes and heavy-handed exposition. Finally, most of the performances are lazy, with the exception of Dwayne Johnson who gives the thin and ridiculous material way more seriousness than it deserves.

Filled with tons of fighting and a heavy body count from several machine gun battles, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION gets away with a PG-13 rating because of its unrealistic violence. It’s hard to imagine any moviegoer would enjoy it, including fans of the concept. Aside from the movie’s high body count and brief but light foul language, there are no other strong moral issues of concerned. However, there is a line in one scene about praying to a vague, politically correct, ecumenical “deity,” or god.
