ZOOTOPIA 2 has returned to the No. 1 spot at the box office!
“After ceding the top spot to Universal and Blumhouse’s horror sequel FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S 2, [ZOOTOPIA 2] returned to first place with $26.3 million in its third weekend, a 39% decline from its prior outing,” Variety reported.
The outlet noted that the movie has already grossed $259 million domestically and $1.13 billion globally, making it the second movie released this year to cross the $1 billion mark.
Deadline reported that ZOOTOPIA 2 reached this milestone “in just 17 days, the fastest ever for a Hollywood animation and for any PG-rated title.”
“Everyone at Disney Animation put their heart, soul and passion into this film to tell a story full of joy, imagination, and incredible thoughtfulness,” said Jared Bush, Chief Creative Officer, Walt Disney Animation Studios, in a statement. “This milestone means the world to us, because more than anything, it means audiences are coming to theaters for a shared experience of watching this movie on the big screen, everyone together, from all walks of life around the world — and that is a ZOOTOPIA dream come true.”
Movieguide® reviewed ZOOTOPIA 2 positively, mentioning its “great animation” and comedy, as well as its “strong allegorical Christian, moral worldview.”
“In 100 years, it’s our most ambitious film that we’ve ever created at Disney Animation,” Bush, who also co-wrote and co-directed the movie, said in a Q&A with Disney. “And it is the most immersive environment you can imagine; the cinematography takes you to places we have never put onscreen before. But, more than that, it is filled with absolute joy.”
He continued, “There’s something about animals that people can relate to. That’s one of the really fun things about ZOOTOPIA: you can identify with an animal. That’s you, that’s your friend, that’s your teacher, that’s a guy you saw at the DMV. There’s something very universal about that.”
“I also think that the themes we talk about [across the entire ZOOTOPIA franchise] are real human themes: ‘How do we get along with one another?’ ‘Are our differences too much?’” Bush said. “No matter who you are or where you are in the world, you can see your story onscreen.”
He also teased Disney’s next moves, saying, “I know what the next 10 years of Disney Animation looks like, and it’s really exciting. The variety is honestly spectacular, and it all comes from filmmaker passion.”
ZOOTOPIA 2’s major box office success is proof that movie audiences want family-friendly movies they can watch together.
