For Hollywood actor Kevin Costner, faith “has really sustained” him over the years.
“The church was central in our lives,” he said in an interview with USA Today, sharing that his family helped build their church, with his grandmother serving as the choir director.
Costner continued, “These fantastic stories of faith and of believing, it’s nice to believe in something. I’d hate to live in a world where I don’t believe in anything.”
“We can’t always explain what moves us or what gives us this kind of determination or this faith that we will come out of this dark spot,” he explained. “We can’t. We just choose to believe, and it’s something that has really sustained me.”
The YELLOWSTONE actor shared that he has “had tremendous ups” and also “been bruised equally…and so how do I choose to live my life, in anger or in faith that things will reveal themselves in the right way? And so I’ve just chosen to do that.”

Costner is sharing his faith this holiday season with his latest project KEVIN COSTNER PRESENTS: THE FIRST CHRISTMAS. The special tells the story of Jesus’ birth, with commentary from both experts and Costner.

KEVIN COSTNER PRESENTS: THE FIRST CHRISTMAS is a special on ABC-TV telling the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. The special features three elements: the plot, narration and interviews with clergy and theologians. The special shows Mary and Joseph’s engagement, the news of Mary’s pregnancy, and their journey to Bethlehem to obey the Roman census. While in Bethlehem, it comes time for Mary to give birth to the incarnation of the Son of God.
KEVIN COSTNER PRESENTS: THE FIRST CHRISTMAS shares the wonderful story of the birth of Jesus Christ. It seeks to portray everything in an accurate light and clearly presents the Gospel. The special is filmed in a unique way and will hold viewers’ attention, especially those who enjoy historical facts. It has a strong Christian, biblical worldview that offers enlightening insights into what the birth of Jesus would have been like at the time and within the culture surrounding it. Kevin Costner does a fantastic job narrating and guiding the special. However, THE FIRST CHRISTMAS has multiple instances of strong violence. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.
“We all think we know [the story],” he explained. “We all wait for this time of year and then we get mad at it, too, because now it’s ‘so much stuff I have to do, and I hate this.’ It’s ‘too many people are coming to the house.’ There’s this other story that changed the world, a lot of the world.”
Speaking to People, Costner said, “I think maybe some of us know a lot, maybe you know just a little, maybe you’re a believer, maybe you’re a cynic or maybe — hopefully — you’re just curious to find out the real story that’s behind the tradition.”
The actor shared his hopes for what viewers will take away from THE FIRST CHRISTMAS in a recent interview with Deseret News.
”We’re bombarded with a lot of things about Christmas,” he said. “There’s these kinds of things that assault us. A lot of things get a lot of red and a lot of green, and there’s a lot of lights … sometimes we forget about the story a little bit.”
He added that THE FIRST CHRISTMAS will give the audience the chance “to just stop and reflect,” saying, “[We] tried to put it into the best perspective we could, and put it in, that we did as an offering. I think there’s always a place for that, where we slow down for a second.”
