THE EAST

"Overcoming a Moral Dilemma"

What You Need To Know:

THE EAST is a morally complicated, but compelling, thriller. The story is about a Christian high-tech security expert, Sarah, who infiltrates an eco-terrorist group to stop them before they can strike. As Sarah goes undercover, she begins to sympathize with the eco-terrorists because of their desire to make a difference. However, she struggles to go along with some of the extreme measures they’ll take to advance their cause. Caught between two different worlds, Sarah must choose which path to take.

THE EAST has a strong moral worldview that’s undercut by some moral ambiguity and immorality. The movie will inspire debate among viewers about what they would do if caught in the lead character’s dilemma. THE EAST is expertly made in every way, with stellar acting, compelling plotting, intelligent dialogue, and zestfully paced direction. The movie’s themes concern such issues as corporate responsibility, environmental concerns, and how to protest injustice peacefully. Though it probably will inspire different answers, the heroine does the right thing in the end. Still, MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong or extreme caution for the movie’s moral ambiguity and more objectionable content.

Content:

(BB, CC, ACap, E, Pa, FR, LL, VV, S, N, AA, D, MM) Strong moral worldview where a Christian high-tech security expert infiltrates an eco-terrorist group to stop them before they can strike, with some light anti-capitalism and light environmentalism, but radical environmentalism is rejected and content includes lead character asks God for guidance and listens to Christian music stations but she’s not a perfect role model morally, so the movie has some pagan antinomianism or lawlessness; 16 obscenities and profanities; some strong violence includes a couple strong punches by security guards against female lead, the kidnapping and drugging of two corporate executives (one man and one woman) into a poisoned waterway that could kill them, eco-terrorists add a controversial medication to the champagne of unsuspecting guests at a party to give pharmaceutical executives and investors “a taste of their own medicine” that winds up disabling them slowly with the implication that some will be killed eventually by the poison; implied cohabitation and fornication; upper male nudity; alcohol use and drunkenness; no smoking but villains drug people; and, kidnapping, dishonesty, cheating, some moral ambiguity, and heroine says, “The system is broken.”

Sarah is a private anti-terrorism expert who helps corporations fight computer hacking and other threats from anti-capitalist terrorists in a private security. Despite being portrayed as a praying Christian who listens to Christian rock even in private, Sarah lives with her boyfriend. She pretends to take an assignment in Dubai. In reality, however, she’s infiltrating a domestic eco-terrorism group called The East.

As she collects information, Sarah is often unable to stop The East from engaging in progressively more deadly and violent behavior toward corporate executives whose firms are known to pollute the environment or cause severe side effects through their medicines. She starts to sympathize with some of the terrorists and (SPOILER ALERT) starts a secret affair with group’s leader that throws her loyalties into question. By the end, she’s illicitly helping The East get files on her fellow agents. However, when she learns they want to physically harm or kill people, she takes the files and winds up traveling the world to fight the corporate corruption peacefully.
