What You Need To Know:
THE RED TURTLE is a co-production with Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli. The animation is beautifully done. The story is creatively told without dialogue, and the emotion is communicated clearly through action and music. Though overly simplistic at times, one can’t help but be touched by the man and woman’s relationship. The only negative aspect is the somewhat magical element of the turtle transforming into a human, which isn’t entirely explained or explored. There are some intense moments, including storms and a tsunami, which require a light caution for THE RED TURTLE.

THE RED TURTLE is a touching animated fantasy with no dialogue. In it, a man lost at sea is washed on the shore of an island. Running around the island, he finds it’s deserted. He builds a raft out of bamboo trees and sets out back into the ocean. He doesn’t make it far when his raft is suddenly demolished by something in the ocean. He’s forced back to land, but he builds another raft and tries again.
As he continues to build rafts, and they get destroyed, the man learns that it’s a giant red turtle that’s destroying his rafts. One day while on land, he sees the red turtle on the beach. In a fit of rage, he flips the turtle upside down and lets it dry out to death, though he feels bad about this later.
As he looks at the turtle’s corpse, the man feels guilt, but that night, the turtle’s body disappears, and inside the shell is a woman. The man builds a shelter around the room and tries to revive her, but it’s not until it starts raining that she wakes up. The two eventually start a relationship and have a son on the island. The family of three grow older together, but eventually the couple’s boy becomes a young man, and he must venture beyond the island.
