He’s summited Mount Everest and survived the harshest conditions, but for adventure man Bear Grylls, writing his book The Greatest Story Ever Told: An Eyewitness Account marks his greatest accomplishment.
“I think it’s definitely been my hardest achievement, and it’s the one I think I’m most proud of, you know, because it’s touching people’s lives all over the world,” Grylls told The Morning. “I mean, we’ve all done lots of things in our life and you put things out there, but I think out of everything, this is what I get the most. Letters, texts, messages from people of all cultures, all faiths, all countries.”
Grylls’ book is all about Jesus and the “incredible true story of a Galilean stonemason who changed the course of the world forever. Beautifully told through the eyewitness accounts of those who knew him best.”

“I think a lot of us grow up with the stories — you know, you might know the story of the Good Samaritan or the nativity play — but actually the whole story is so life-enhancing and life-empowering and challenging and beautiful,” Grylls said of Jesus’ life. “And I just thought, people don’t read the Bible. I mean, it’s hard to read. You know, I think if you have faith, it’s obviously milk and honey, and it’s amazing. But I think just to read it straight is hard for people. And I think this is like a really brilliant sort of bridge into faith.”
He explained that people are “hungry” for purpose, meaning and “finding light and love and home in their lives.”
“And I just thought nobody’s ever done this. I mean, a pastor in America wrote to me this morning. He said, ‘You got it. I had no idea. This is like John Grisham’s written the Jesus story.’ And I thought, that’s actually good — stick it on the back straight away,” he said.
The book debuted in July, and he’s heard testimonies of how The Greatest Story Ever Told has impacted people’s faith.
“Young people all over the world are discovering this story for the first time…It’s been the most humbling and inspiring journey I’ve ever been on,” he posted on Instagram along with a photo of a young boy reading his book. “I no longer feel this is just my book — it’s all of ours who share and encourage people to read, find life and home. The story of Yeshua touches people of all cultures, religions and ages. It inspires us to be more, to give more, dare more, love more, live more, forgive more, & to risk more.”
Grylls’ book quickly became a Sunday Times No. 1 best-selling book, and he couldn’t be more grateful for the impact it’s had so far.
