Courage and forgiveness are extolled, as is family. There are some fantasy comments about magic, more like CHRONICLES OF NARNIA than Harry Potter. Some scary moments warrant caution for young children.

More Detail:

Based loosely on the famous ballet, Disney’s THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS is about a teenage girl named Clara who must go into another world to return a stolen key to save the people of that world. THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS has a strong redemptive, biblical, moral worldview with very little questionable content, though much younger children may get scared.

As the movie opens, Clara shows her brother the laws of physics, that every action has a reaction. When her father calls them down to the Christmas tree, he gives each of the children a gift from their mother. Sadly, their mother has passed away, but Clara is left with an egg that can only be opened by a key, though the key is missing. Later on, Clara and her family go to her godfather’s estate for a large Christmas Eve ball. It comes time in the night that Godfather Drosselmeyer gives each child a gift, but they must find it. Clara follows the way to her gift, which leads her into a different World.

Seeing the key to her egg, Clara tries to grab it, but a mouse steals it from her. Racing after the mouse, she comes to a bridge with a Nutcracker Guard named Captain Phillip. Clara introduces herself to Captain Phillip. He asks if she is the Queen Maria’s daughter, to which she realizes her mother was the Queen of this world, which makes her the Princess. Phillip tells Clara that going beyond that bridge is very dangerous, but she orders him to stay by her side always. After going across the bridge, Clara chases down the mouse with the key, but the mouse turns into a large cluster of mice that make up a huge mouse, who’s able to get away.

Clara is saddened she lost the key, but Phillip takes her into the Palace. There, she meets the leaders of the three realms, the Land of Snowflakes, the Land of Flowers and the Land of Sweets. The Land of Sweets is taken care of by the Sugar Plum Fairy, who tells Clara about the fourth realm, which is a dangerous place headed up by Mother Ginger. The Sugar Plum Fairy has been looking for the same key Clara is. Mother Ginger stole the key. The key must be regained to save the land from disaster. With Captain Phillip by her side, Clara must brave the Fourth Realm to find the key and save the Four Realms.

THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS takes viewers into a wonderful new world. It’s very well-made movie, with gorgeous special effects and set design. The main character, Clara, played by Mackenzie Foy, has a grace, intelligence and bravery. Foy does a great job playing Clara. The story is filled with excitement from beginning to end.

THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS has a strong Christian, redemptive, moral, biblical worldview, with positive references to Christmas, giving of yourself, and doing what’s right. Clara has to learn how to ask for forgiveness, see someone else’s view point and learn. She, along with Phillip, are willing to make sacrifices, do whatever it takes to fight evil, and do the right thing to help protect others. Clara even makes a powerful statement that being selfless, and doing things for others, not yourself, is what we should be doing in our lives. There are some fantasy, whimsical comments about magic, which is more like THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA than Harry Potter. Though they’re played more for laughs, the Snowflake leader and the Flower leader are very silly, effeminate men, which may include a subliminal message. Also, some younger audiences may be scared of some scenes and characters. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children, especially children who get scared easily.
