An Open Letter to Miley Cyrus About Her “Abortion is Healthcare” Post

Dear Miley,
I can say Ms. Cyrus or Mrs. Hemsworth if you’d prefer, but I figured since it feels like I’ve known you for so long, I can call you Miley…
You see, you’ve been on my mind the past few days after some recent posts on your social media. A friend of mine asked me if I had seen your buzzing photos to which I replied “no.” This friend then proceeded to show me you on a cake that reads “ABORTION IS HEALTHCARE.” You tagged the Happy Hippie Foundation which you founded in 2014. In it, you’re also licking the cake presumably in your birthday suit, which is no longer a surprise or even a shock to those who have seen where your career has gone.
The photo is way too scandalous for me to include in this letter, but I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. You partnered with Planned Parenthood to raise awareness for abortion in light of the recent pro-life policies many states have enacted. You also posted several photos posing with fruit to mimic male and female private parts. As you expected and maybe even wanted, you stirred up quite a bit of conversation from that.
You also linked the photos to your new explicit song called “Mother’s Daughter,” which is on your EP that has a sexually suggestive “play on words” title. You really do have a beautiful voice, but I’m afraid it was clouded with excess foul language and ad nauseum falsehoods on what freedom constitutes for a woman in 2019.
Miley, you have to understand that we have many similarities. Like you, I’m female, and I value my body and my rights. Not only that, but I am a woman who’s around your same age, so your passion for standing up for what you believe in is something I understand greatly. That’s precisely why I feel comfortable championing the opposite of what you and Planned Parenthood espouse.
One person responded to your campaign with a verse from Proverbs that reads, “A fool finds pleasure in wicked schemes, but a person of understanding delights in wisdom (NIV).” I understand you have a Christian background and I won’t speak on your relationship with the Lord because I don’t know the entirety of your heart. However, I can’t help but feel the conviction of this verse when it relates to abortion. The abortion advocates you align with have gone from calling abortion “rare” and “something no one wants” to something worth celebrating, shouting out, and now, putting on cakes.
Have you seen the horrors of abortion? It’s literally the opposite of healthcare, for the woman, and especially the baby. I’d encourage you to watch the movie UNPLANNED or look into the organization Save The Storks to see what being pro-woman and pro-life really looks like.
The Bible tells us that we are made in the image of God, and that God Himself knits us together in the wombs of our mothers. This is such a beautiful picture of intimacy and purpose that abortion destroys.
The truth is, there are low odds of you ever reading this letter. I get it, you’re busy and can’t possibly look into everyone who has their two cents on your choices. With this in mind though, I am hopeful that people that read this letter will be compelled to pray for you. You have nearly 95 million Instagram followers of which most probably saw these horrible posts. Listen, we know you aren’t that same innocent Disney Hannah Montana anymore. You’ve shown us time and time again of that. Even still, the Gospel demonstrates that no one is beyond redemption and that we’re saved by grace if we repent.
So dear Miley, I pray that instead of using your platform to promote the schemes of wickedness, you’d do an about-face on your sin. I’m not giving up on you or Hollywood. I believe that you’re extraordinarily talented and like so many before you, found the whims of culture to be more attractive than God and his standards.
My intention is not to be harsh, but rather explain to you my heart in the hopes that it would affect yours.
