Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Ink Netflix Deal to Make “Inspirational Family Programming”

By Allyson Vannatta, Senior Writer

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry signed a multi-year production deal with Netflix, Variety reports.

The Duke and Duchess moved to California earlier this year and are now ready to start working in the entertainment industry.

“Our lives, both independent of each other and as a couple, have allowed us to understand the power of the human spirit: of courage, resilience, and the need for connection,” Meghan and Harry said in a statement. “Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shining a light on people and causes around the world, our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope.”

Under their multi-year deal, the couple will make movies, scripted TV shows, documentaries, and children’s series.

The deal comes as several projects of Harry and Meghan’s are already in development. These projects include a nature docuseries and an animated series about inspirational women according to Variety.

“As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us, as is powerful storytelling through a truthful and relatable lens,” the couple said. “We are pleased to work with Ted and the team at Netflix whose unprecedented reach will help us share impactful content that unlocks action.”

Diversity is one aspect that Harry and Meghan want to focus on in their deal, according to someone who knows them well.

Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos said, “Harry and Meghan have inspired millions of people all around the world with their authenticity, optimism and leadership. We’re incredibly proud they have chosen Netflix as their creative home – and are excited about telling stories with them that can help build resilience and increase understanding for audiences everywhere.”

Meghan and Harry have already dabbled in projects with Netflix and Disney+ since leaving the royal family.

Earlier this year, Meghan voiced the Disney nature documentary ELEPHANT (2020).

Harry worked on the documentary RISING PHOENIX about the Paralympic Games, which is now streaming on Netflix.

We’re excited to see what the future holds for this partnership.

This programme has been many months in the making, and The Duke and Duchess are eager to focus their energies on the great work being done in Southern Africa. From meeting with Archbishop Desmond Tutu to joining ‘Waves for Change’ on Monwabisi Beach, the South Africa programme will be educational and inspiring. The Duke is especially proud to continue the legacy left by his mother with her work in Angola as he joins Halo Trust again in an effort to rid the world of landmines. HRH will also travel to Malawi where he will check in on the British Army’s partnership with African Parks and will be working on the ground supporting local communities. The Duke is particularly proud to be able to deliver an exciting new initiative, a Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy three-country partnership which he designed and consulted with Governments in Namibia, Botswana and Angola to protect forest and wildlife corridors around the Okavango Delta.
