For AMERICAN IDOL alum Jordin Sparks, making faith- and “family-oriented” content is a priority.
“It’s amazing to be part of something like this,” she said while appearing at this year’s Movieguide® Awards Gala. Sparks performed a cover of Diane Warren’s “How Do I Live.”
The Grammy-nominated artist continued, “I was always very family-oriented. I’ve always been very vocal about my faith, but once I had my son, it was like, ‘Okay, I want to make sure that I’m part of things that I can be proud of and that he can be proud of me to be a part of.”
Sparks is mom to Dana Isaiah Thomas Jr., a.k.a. DJ, who she shares with husband Dana Isaiah
“It feels refreshing, to be honest, because there’s a lot of dark, heavy and, frankly, sad things happening,” she said of her involvement with Movieguide®. “To be able to walk away from a film where you’re just like, ‘That was really good, and I feel really happy and uplifted’…I think that’s important, too.”

Sparks concluded, “We’ve got to keep the balance, and we’ve always got to look for the light.”
The singer recently weighed in on whether or not she wants DJ to follow in her footsteps, telling PEOPLE, “It’s kind of cosmic when I’m sitting next to him, and I’ll start singing. Then he joins in. I’m just like, ‘I can’t believe that this happened. You’re able to do this like I’m able to do it.’”
“I would love to do [a mother-son duet], but I am also not one of those people who want to force him to do it because I do it,” Sparks continued. “If he comes up to me one day and is like, ‘Mom, I want to be a singer like you,’ then we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.”
She added, “Right now, he’s kind of exploring everything that he likes, but I’m not going to force him to do what I’m doing because it’s a lot to do this, but if he wanted to do, I would be right there for him.”
Sparks also recently reflected on her AMERICAN IDOL journey.
“Next year will be 20 years since I won AMERICAN IDOL. Can you believe it?” she said during an episode of her “What’s Your Spark?” podcast. “I’ve been through a lot of challenges and a lot of ups and downs, but I wouldn’t be the person I am now if I didn’t go through all of those things. And even the things that were really, really sucky, I wouldn’t change them.”
She continued, “I would go through all of it again, all the craziness, all the crazy relationships, I would go through all of it again just to get to the point that I’m at now.”
Sparks’ commitment to making family-friendly content has contributed to her longevity in the entertainment industry.
