SUCCESSION Season 1 Is Well-Produced But Contains Excessive Foul Language

SUCCESSION Season 1 is an HBO Max series starring Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, and Sarah Snook. It is written by an ensemble of writers including Jesse Armstrong, Susan Soon He Stan-ton, Jon Brown, and Georgia Pritchett. It is produced by Jesse Armstrong and Will Ferrell.
SUCCESSION Season 1 follows the Roy family, who lead an international media conglomerate, and the struggle for power between the family following the sudden illness of CEO and family patriarch Logan Roy.
SUCCESSION Season 1 follows aged Logan Roy, CEO of Waystar Royco, an international media conglomerate, as he decides upon the company’s heir. His second-oldest son, Kendall Roy, is the apparent heir. Logans three other children, Roman, Connor, and Shiv, struggle with balancing power and family feuds alongside personal ventures. When Logan falls ill, his children and wife must grapple for power and see who will be the next leader of Waystar Royco.
Kendall struggles with his father’s decisions and combats his own addiction problems, as well as a separation from his wife. His brother, Roman, must decide his loyalty within Waystar and labors to achieve his father’s desire. Shiv, Logan’s only daughter, must deal with the fight between her political work and her family. Alongside personal struggles, Waystar Royco sees its decline, which the family must prevent before it becomes public.
The worldview presented in SUCCESSION Season 1 is full of greed and immorality. Each character strives to reach the top and will stop at nothing to do so. The dysfunctional family engages in frequent immoral and destructive behaviors to achieve what they want, with little consideration of its implications. The fight between family and internal wants and needs is evident in the show, and their inner desires often win.
SUCCESSION Season 1 has excessive amounts of foul language and profanities, including the f-word. There are various instances of sexual content, some implied and some depicted. Additionally, there is an excessive amount of drug and alcohol consumption that is often glossed over. The characters engage in other forms of immorality throughout the show, including lying, stealing, blackmail, and dysfunctional family relationships.
SUCCESSION Season 1 is incredibly well-produced and shot. Various shots show the struggle of power and alliances in a compelling fashion. The writing is superb, and each episode leaves the audience wanting more. The acting is immaculate and allows the audience to connect better with what would otherwise be unlikeable characters. The score used throughout the show is carefully placed in scenes to convey urgency and danger. Overall, the show is well-produced, well-shot, and well-written.
SUCCESSION Season 1 is a well-produced and well-written show with excessive foul language, drinking and drug use, and other immoral elements. Dysfunctional family and greed are severe problems and mar the show’s worldview. As a result, Movieguide® advises extreme caution for adult viewers.
