Twitter Cancels Conservative Congresswoman’s Account

By Movieguide® Contributor

In an age where presidents, pundits and activists are often “canceled” on social media platforms, along with an increasing concern about the impact of such media among the general public, Twitter makes headlines in its decision to pause the account of Vicky Hartzler, Representative of Missouri.

Congresswoman Hartzler has two Twitter accounts: a verified blue-ribbon account – @RepHartzler – and an unverified account – @VickyHartzlerMO, the latter of which has a smaller following and promotes Hartzler’s campaign in running for a seat in the Senate.

According to Michael Hafner, her campaign manager, it was this second account with the meager following that was blocked.

Her allegedly offending tweet reads: “Women’s Sports are for Women, not men pretending to be women.”

The congresswoman’s controversial post resulted in the account’s suspension and a warning message from Twitter. The company said the tweet went against its rules concerning hateful conduct.

“You may not promote violence against, threaten, or harass other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease,” the warning stated.

Hartzler’s tweet and its blunt message come amid the changing tides of coed sports and concerns over the fairness of competitions that permit transsexual contestants.

Olympic swimmer Lia Thomas, for example, is a transgender athlete who has garnered significant attention from the media in recent months. Thomas is the face of a larger movement of pro-transgender athletic opportunities affecting both high school and higher education.

Former Olympic athlete Nancy Hogshead-Makar, see “nothing fair” about Thomas’ Olympic opportunity as Thomas – a biologically-born male who retains a certain masculine physique – competes on the women’s team. As far as Hogshead-Makar is concerned, “Trans women should compete with biological women, so long as they can demonstrate that they have lost their sex-linked, male puberty advantage prior to competition in the women’s category.”

Still others perceive any transgender contestants in sports designated for the opposite biological sex as a severe hindrance on the rest of the participating athletes.

Hartzler’s tweet criticizing biologically-male transgender athletes also contained an ad against policies that favor such gender-fluid sports.

Twitter says the congresswoman’s account can be unlocked once the offending tweet has been deleted. However, her campaign informed The Associated Press that she has no intention of removing the post. The campaign further commented that it views the incident as an infringement on free speech.

At the time of writing, Hartzler’s Senate campaign account is viewable to the public, but nothing has been posted since Feb. 28.
