Coach Tony Dungy Responds to Backlash Over Support of Fatherhood Bill: ‘I Am Serving The Lord’

By Movieguide® Staff

Football coaching icon Tony Dungy recently received backlash after appearing next to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) at a signing event for HB 7065, a bill that seeks to aid fathers in the call to fatherhood.

Dungy is no stranger to the issue, as he helped found All Pro Dad.

The organization’s website reads: “Our staff is committed to bringing intentional focus to fathers around the world. We are here to offer you guidance on how to protect and provide for your family. Our message will inspire you to embrace who you are and give you the tools to be a hero to your kids.”

The bill in question allows Florida’s Department of Children and Families to provide grants to nonprofit organizations that seek to give fathers the tools to succeed in the household.

“Any dad who may not be engaged, we want to be able to support,” DeSantis said at the event. “We’ve got programs, we’ve got community groups, we’ve got nonprofits … You’re not a man by leaving your kids hung out to dry. You need to be there.”

However, critics blasted Dungy, but the former coach remained focused on his Kingdom mission.

“2 days ago I spoke on behalf of a Florida bill that supports dads & families and it offended some people,” Dungy wrote in a tweet. “… I am serving the Lord so I’ll keep supporting dads and families.”

Dungy has been very open about how his faith guides his personal and professional actions.

Movieguide® previously reported on Dungy:

Former NFL coach and pro football player Tony Dungy recently critiqued President Joe Biden on the basis of his pro-abortion agenda and his seemingly disordered approach to reconciling that stance with his faith.

“I’m curious as to what new information the President has gotten that has changed his mind on abortion and life? Reading the article he seemed to talk about what his faith required him to accept. What has caused him to move away from that faith-based position?”

In years past, Biden has supported anti-abortion legislation, but the President’s current agenda supports the Roe v. Wade decision, striving for ever more radical pro-abortive laws.

Dungy’s Twitter thread focused not so much on the legal issues surrounding abortion so much as his confusion regarding Biden’s transformative take on life.

“I want to know what factors changed his [Biden’s] mind. That is my question. Not political. Not separation of church and state. At one point he thought abortion was wrong. Now he thinks it’s OK. Why the change?”
