THE LEGEND OF ZELDA’s release date just jumped from May 7, 2027, to April 30, 2027.

“In order to deliver it to everyone even one day sooner, the team is united in advancing production,” Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto wrote on X. “It’s less than a year until release, but please wait just a little longer.”

It’s unclear why the release date changed, but it could be to give it more space between STAR WARS: STARFIGHTER, which comes out on May 28, Engadget reported.

Benjamin Evan Ainsworth stars as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda. Other cast members have not been announced yet. Wes Ball directs. Derek Connolly and T.S. Nowlin wrote the screenplay.

“I’m already looking forward to their performances,” Miyamoto said.

Production for the movie began in November at several locations in New Zealand. It finished filming last month, Travel Pirates reported.

A decade before THE LEGEND OF ZELDA was announced, Ball said it would be “the next big mo-cap Avatar-like movie,” adding that he “could never even hope to have the chance to direct it.” He recently said it will be “this awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn’t like THE LORD OF THE RINGS it’s its own thing.” He added it will be like a “live-action Miyazaki” film, referring to Studio Ghibli’s animated movies.

Dichen Lachman was spotted on set playing a character who resembles Impa. When asked whether she’s involved in the movie, she said she is “lucky to be in that universe” of the ZELDA fandom theorizing but did not confirm or deny her involvement. Child actors Maxwell Andrews and Faith Delaney are also tumored to be appear in the movie, possibly as the child versions of Zelda and Link.

IMDB’s synopsis for the movie reads, “A live-action adaptation of the video game franchise ‘The Legend of Zelda’ follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness. The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce-an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.”

The first Zelda game was released in Japan in 1986. Now 40 years later, multiple generations enjoy the video games and franchise.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA will stream on Netflix approximately four to six weeks after its theatrical release, which includes IMAX showings.
