Nintendo executive Shigeru Miyamoto revealed actors Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth have been cast to play Zelda and Link in the upcoming LEGEND OF ZELDA movie.
“This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of THE LEGEND OF ZELDA, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen,” Miyamoto announced on X. “The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience.”

This news is extremely exciting for fans. It’s the first major update since the movie was first announced in 2023. Along with Bragason and Ainsworth, other people already connected to the project include Wes Ball as the director, Derek Conoll as the writer and Avi Arad as a producer.
“I have been working on the live-action film of THE LEGEND OF ZELDA for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films,” Miyamoto said on X when the movie was first announced. “I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
The LEGEND OF ZELDA casting is not the only major news about Nintendo-based movies to come out this week. The copyright for a Donkey Kong movie was filed almost ensuring that this project is in the works. Furthermore, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has previously stated the company has plans to create more movies inspired by the company’s IP.

“Although we cannot discuss our plans beyond THE LEGEND OF ZELDA movie at this time, we are working on various other projects,” Furukawa said in an investors call in June.
Additionally, Nintendo is also working on a sequel to 2023’s SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, which was a major hit and has encouraged the company to continue its path in the movie business.
“I can’t tell you much but I can say that there is another MARIO movie coming,” Chris Pratt, who voiced Mario in the movie, said. “It gets me very excited thinking about the world of Mario and Nintendo in general. I think over the next decade we will be seeing lots of stories coming out of that world. I was thrilled, honored, and blessed to be part of the first one and moving forward I’m open to doing as much and as little as they want from me. I can’t say much but I am just as excited as everyone else.”
It is certainly an exciting time for Nintendo fans as more and more of their favorite characters get reimagined for the big screen. If these upcoming movies can deliver as great of a story as THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, Nintendo will become a powerhouse in the industry in no time.
