SOUND OF FREEDOM Distribution Was Previously Rejected by Two Hollywood Studios

By Movieguide® Contributor

Two Hollywood studios previously turned down SOUND OF FREEDOM when the producer approached them about distribution several years ago, according to the producer.

Since its July 4 release, the movie has earned over $181 million at the box office.

However, the movie almost didn’t reach the big screen, Newsweek reported.

Producer Eduardo Verástegui approached two streaming services, Netflix and Amazon Prime, when THE SOUND OF FREEDOM wrapped filming in 2018, only to have them “not even answering my phone calls.”

“You start losing hope, because people are telling you that this movie is not going to be good business for them,” he shared.

Disney eventually obtained the rights but didn’t do anything more with the movie.

SOUND OF FREEDOM “sat in limbo until Verástegui wrangled the rights back off Disney and set off to find a new distributor,” Newsweek added.

The producer told Breitbart that he knocked “on doors with Netflix, Amazon, and other studios…We sent hundreds and hundreds of messages from different people. Nothing.”

Eventually, after asking God to “send some angels to rescue this video,” SOUND OF FREEDOM found distribution with Angel Studios.

However, some believe the platforms rejected streaming the movie for more sinister reasons.

Matt Wallace shared on X, “NEWS ALERT: Netflix and Amazon Prime JUST TURNED DOWN Sound of Freedom (One of the most popular movies of the year)! THEY DO NOT WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT PEDOWOOD TO COME OUT.”

“There is no indication that Netflix or Prime Video have been approached to license the film for its Streaming Video on Demand window following its run in theaters,” Newsweek reported.

However, this statement has not been confirmed or denied, and there’s still hope that at least one of these streaming services, or others, will pick up the popular thriller.

Part of Movieguide®’s review for SOUND OF FREEDOM reads:

SOUND OF FREEDOM is gripping and heartbreaking, but hope-giving. The movie sheds light on the need for strong people to stand up for God’s children around the world who are caught in the vicious, abusive system of sex trafficking. SOUND OF FREEDOM has a strong Christian, moral worldview that promotes sacrifice and the message that “God’s children are not for sale.” MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong and extreme caution for the movie’s mature subject matter, implied and depicted violence, and abuse of children.
