More Detail:
Episode 108 of Prime Video’s series HOUSE OF DAVID offers a strong ending to the first season. As David enters the battlegrounds to see his brothers, he hears Goliath defy Israel and God. This inspires David to volunteer to defend the honor of God and his nation when nobody else will step up. King Saul allows him to serve as Israel’s champion and defends this decision, even when confronted by other Israeli leaders. Though David is scared to enter the battle, he believes God is with him and will allow him to be victorious despite the strong possibility of his defeat.
As the episode begins, an ambush catches Jonathan and the group of Israeli soldiers sneaking into the Philistine camp to slay Goliath as he sleeps. The mercenary from Endor betrays them all, and the Philistines kill everyone else except for Jonathan. The Philistine leader, King Achish, mocks Jonathan and holds him captive. He decides to free Jonathan and tells him to order King Saul to surrender or they will attack. The Israelites only have one more day to produce a champion to combat Goliath before the impending attack.
Back at the camp, the Israeli soldiers are in bad shape as they wait for the Philistines to make the first move. Though Goliath continues to walk onto the battlefield and defy Israel and their God, nobody dares to volunteer to fight the giant. However, as Goliath speaks, David arrives at the Israel camp to see his brothers. When he hears what Goliath has to say, he volunteers to fight Goliath because he won’t stand for the blaspheming of God. Though the soldiers laugh him off, and his brothers tell him to cut it out, Israel’s General hears what he has to say and brings him to King Saul.
Given an audience before the king, David asks how Israel could’ve forgotten how the greatness of God trumps the greatness of anyone on this earth. Because of this, he believes the Lord will give him victory over Goliath, no matter how impossible this may seem. These words embolden King Saul, who names David as Israel’s champion and prepares him to fight.
As David is fit with the king’s armor, King Saul’s daughter, Michal, whom he knows from his time at the castle, visits him. She shares that she’s extremely terrified for David, though for some reason, she also believes in him. She then gives him a scripture, encouraging him that the Lord will be with him throughout the battle. Finally, they kiss before David leaves the tent to continue his preparation.
David goes to a stream to collect rocks for his sling and sees a vision of his fight against Goliath. Soon after, Jonathan visits him at the stream and asks him why he volunteered to be champion. Jonathan then realizes that the Lord anointed David to replace King Saul and offers him advice on when to attack Goliath to defeat him. David returns to Israel’s camp to enter the battle.
As David walks through the camp, he continues to be mocked by the soldiers, mainly because all he carries into battle is his sling and a pouch filled with rocks. His brothers beg him not to go, believing he will die at Goliath’s hands of Goliath. Though scared, David continues forward, and once he’s on the front line, calls out Goliath to battle.
The stage is set for one of the greatest moments, most exciting moments in human history.
The final episode of HOUSE OF DAVID: Season One is highly entertaining, as the entire season builds up to this moment. David’s relationships with his brothers, Saul’s daughter and God all climax as he faces a seemingly inevitable death at the hands of Goliath. Meanwhile, the fate of the entire nation of Israel is in the balance, as it appears they’re hopeless against the Philistine army. The staging of David’s confrontation with Goliath is superb.
Episode 108 of HOUSE OF DAVID faithfully stresses the biblical record, despite the program’s dramatic embellishments, It also affirms the sovereignty of God and the fact that He’s greater than any power on Earth. However, Episode 108 features some strong action violence with a little blood, including David’s decapitation of Goliath. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children and young teenagers.
