Candace Cameron Bure and her podcast guests this season, son Lev and Pastor JP Pokluda, recently discussed how to reframe the distractions social media can cause.
“I think that social media can be a big distraction,” Lev said during an episode of his mom’s podcast. “I’m not on social media, but again, the devil is so cunning that he’ll find ways to try and pull me back. Man, he will do whatever he can to bring you where you fall.”
Lev shared that he got off social media after getting a screen report on his phone that told him he had spent 12 hours that day on his phone. After seeing that, he decided to delete Instagram.
“When I did that, I gained a lot of clarity into the other ways that social media was taking control over me personally,” he explained.
Pokluda said that, while there are “some distractions that you can’t remove altogether,” like an injury that’s aching, social media is a distraction that you can remove. However, for the distractions that you can’t remove, Pokluda shared a way to reframe them.
“If you can’t remove it, what would it look like to leverage it for the kingdom of heaven?” he asked. “So, for example, if my knee hurt, how do I give praise to God in the midst of the pain in my knee so that someone might come to know him in a greater way?”
It’s a topic Pokluda explored further in a 2024 speech at Liberty University, telling students they need to make faith the center of their lives.

“Jesus is asking you for everything; He doesn’t do well in the backseat,” Pokluda explained. “When you give Him an hour and half on Sunday, or 15 minutes in the morning, it’s not what He’s asking you for. He’s asking you for your screen time, your dating life, your friendships, your family, your health.”
He continued, “All of those things, Jesus is sovereign over [them], and they’re His whether you give them to Him or not. He wants all of it, and not because He’s greedy, but because He loves you, and He knows that your very best life is one that’s lived for Him, completely for Him.”
Bure has also spoken about how she makes time for her faith, even in a world of distractions.
“I am plugged in online,” she told a fan in an Instagram Q&A. “If I’m traveling or out of town for an extended period of time, I watch my church services online. I always have my Bible with me wherever I travel. I stay up to date on @thebiblerecap and I have women in my life I pray with and study with. We do it all online using some of my favorite apps like Voxer, Zoom and Marco Polo.”
Bure, Lev and Pokluda’s conversation is an excellent reminder that, while there are many distractions in our lives, we can always find a way to center our faith.
