While discussing spiritual warfare with Candace Cameron Bure, pastor JP Pokluda explained how scripture equips Christians with the tools they need to combat Satan.
“When the enemy says, ‘I’m not good enough, I’m like, I’m not good enough.’ But my God is. My God is good enough” Pokluda told the “Candace Cameron Bure podcast.” “And He says He’s going to finish the good works, [the good works] that He actually started in me, He’s going to carry them out to completion…So, we’re combatting [whatever] lie with the truth. The lie that I deserve better, it’s like, well, what do I actually deserve? So whatever lie the enemy throws at us, there is a comparing truth.”
These truths are the primary resource Christians can use to combat Satan when he whispers in our ears. Jesus even shows an example of this during His temptation. For example, when Satan tempts him to turn stones into bread to satisfy His hunger, Jesus says, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God,’” quoting Deuteronomy 8:3.
While memorizing scripture is an incredibly powerful tool, it is not required in order to turn to the Bible when our spirit is failing. Bure explained how she turns to Ephesians 6 when she is feeling weak to remind herself of the armor of God.
“We have to keep our faith strong. There’s nothing better to me than when I’m praying,” Bure said. “And I always go to — especially when I’m about to face something really difficult — I go through Ephesians 6, and I list [the armor of God] all out, and I literally put on that armor of God over me.”

“And when I’m saying it and I’m repeating it, I mean, I’m imagining everything; you know, the belt of truth and the shield of faith and the sword of the spirit and my feet, my steps of peace, like putting on the show that’s going to take me into that battle,” she continued. “And I imagine that armor all over my whole body. And, it helps. I feel genuinely protected by God.”
Turning to the Lord and finding solace in scripture is an exercise Christians have practiced for thousands of years because it works. The Lord does not shy away when called upon, and He is always with us. The conversation between Pokluda and Bure is a great reminder as to why scripture is so powerful and has such a large impact on the life of a Christian.
