Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek think they know what made their MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE characters’ marriage work.
“It was a good marriage,” Cranston told PEOPLE of his character, Hal’s, relationship with Kaczmarek’s Lois in an exclusive interview for the four-part MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE: LIFE’S STILL UNFAIR series. “They complemented each other because of the contrast to each other.”
“The thing that they really had in common was a deep, deep-rooted love for each other,” he continued. “And you always felt no matter what was going on in that house, they would still be together. They’ll be together until one of them—”
Kaczmarek echoed Cranston’s sentiments, saying it’s “remarkable” the show still connects with audiences 20 years after it originally aired.

“We had a great time doing it, but boy, I’ve been so overwhelmed with joy at things people always say, ‘I love this episode, the moment this happened,'” she shared. “I think these people really watched closely or several times that this show is really beloved in a way that we loved it, but I didn’t realize it was that universally renowned for that. There was nothing topical about the show. There was nothing political. There wasn’t anything sexual about it.”
“It was just universally funny and that always lives on. I think the reason people are enjoying it, again, who are even seeing it for their first time, is that it’s like someone falling out of banana peel. It’s just funny,” she continued.
Cranston explained that he and Kaczmarek “didn’t realize that it would have that level of importance in people’s lives.”
“They placed a value on being able to watch a show as a family,” he said. “And I think we didn’t realize the impact of that, but it is there. We’re really grateful for that.”
The revival picks up 20 years later from where early 2000s series left Malcolm and his family, “and after all that time, they’ve learned absolutely nothing.”
Along with Cranston and Kaczmarek, original stars Frankie Muniz (Malcolm), Christopher Kennedy Masterson (Francis) and Justin Berfield (Reese) return for LIFE’S STILL UNFAIR. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark replaces Erik Per Sullivan as Dewey.
Muniz, who is also an Indy series race car driver, has been anxiously awaiting sharing the revival with fans.
“My life is so wild,” he wrote on Instagram last week. “Tomorrow, MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE releases to the world. Sometimes it’s hard to actually take in because it’s all so surreal. I’m trying hard to be the best me I can be. Still have a lot of work to do.”
MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE: LIFE’S STILL UNFAIR premiered on Friday, April 10. It’s available to stream on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
