Jolyon, a.k.a. Jo, Forsyte’s wedding to Frances ensures his family’s place in London’s high society, and makes him stepfather to June, an opinionated child who becomes an opinionated young woman. She struggles with the family’s wealth and position, as well as the expectations they place on her to marry well.
Elsewhere, Jo clashes with his cousin Soames and uncle James, who both resent his high position in the family firm. Soames and James will do anything to build on the Forsyte wealth, a position Jo, a former aspiring artist, is firmly against.
The characters orbiting the Forsyte family also deal with their own dramas — Irene, a dancer, experiences a chance encounter with Soames, who later supports her amid family tragedy, while Louise, the dressmaker who creates a beautiful ballgown for June’s birthday party, struggles to keep her distance from the Forsyte family — and to keep her most important secret hidden from the powerful London family.
