SUPERMAN rules the box office and brings DC Studios and Warner Bros. along for the ride. The comic book movie’s box office take just made the studio the top-earner at the domestic box office this year.
“We’ve seen really strong daily holds [for SUPERMAN] and usually that is indicative of word of mouth kicking in, especially on a big film like this that already opened pretty well,” Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder and owner of Box Office Theory, told CNN.
SUPERMAN earned $57.5 million in its second week, bringing its box office total to $235 million — and Warner Bros.’ total box office take for the year so far to $1.32 billion, per Deadline. This makes Warner Bros. the highest earning studio of the year right now, beating out Disney/20th Century Studios, who are at $1.27 billion.
This is just the latest in a string of financial successes for Warner Bros. The studio has had six movies open at No. 1 this year and boast more $10 million+ grossing days this year than any other studio (34 days).
SUPERMAN wasn’t the only big earner at the box office this weekend. JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH held strong at No. 2, with $23.4 million, while Sony’s I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER sequel debuted in third place, bringing in $13 million.
SMURFS also debuted this weekend, earning $11 million. Rounding out the Top 5, F1 in its fourth week made $9.6 million.

“When movies open this big, sometimes they drop off significantly in their second and third weekends,” Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore, told CNN of the longevity we’re seeing this summer. “But it seems to be a pattern this year, particularly this summer, where you have blockbusters holding in there.”
Dergarabedian also spoke to Deadline about the big numbers we’re seeing at the box office this summer, explaining, “The summer of ‘25 has had almost everything working in its favor.”
He pointed to Marvel’s THUNDERBOLTS* as the summer’s kick-off, “followed by a record-breaking Memorial weekend and from start to finish a relentless onslaught of potential hit films week after week,” and predicted “the summer season is well positioned to hit the $4 billion mark.”
And the summer’s not over yet — Marvel’s upcoming THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS is projected to make between $100-$110 million, per Deadline, while Universal’s THE BAD GUYS 2 is predicted to make around $20 million.
These high box office earnings are encouraging for both studios and theaters, as it looks like the industry is finally returning to pre-pandemic numbers.
