Josh Brolin revealed that he would return to the MCU in a heartbeat if the Russo brothers called him and told him they had a new script with Thanos in it.
“If [the Russo brothers] called me in London right now and said, ‘Let’s do this,’ I’d be like, ‘I’ll be there tomorrow,’” Brolin told the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast.
Brolin shared a similar sentiment in the past when rumors spread that Thanos was returning to the MCU. Though he has always denied these reports, he often shares that he would be thrilled to come back.
“You know, I hear kind of like through the grapevine, that they’re gonna bring him back,” Brolin said in early 2024. “And there’s the WHAT IF…? series, and that’s a different kind of Thanos and all of that. But I don’t know in the Marvel world whether they’re going to bring him back, but I didn’t know that he was the most killed-off Marvel villain…You learn something new every day.”
The death of Thanos ended phase three of the Marvel universe. With such a pivotal moment in the franchise hinging on his defeat, it seems unlikely Brolin would ever be asked to reprise the role. However, stranger things have happened, and the upcoming AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY seems like it may revive more than one “retired” character.

Haley Atwell, who played Agent Peggy Carter in the first two CAPTAIN AMERICA movies, for example, has already been confirmed as a cast member in the movie, as is Robert Downey Jr., though he will take on a new role as Dr. Doom rather than his iconic Tony Stark/Iron Man. Meanwhile, many speculate Chris Evans will return as Captain America. Though Evans has adamantly denied these claims, he also admitted he misses the role.
“That’s not true, though,” Evans told Esquire when asked about a story Deadline ran that confirmed his involvement in DOOMSDAY. “This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years — ever since ENDGAME. I’ve just stopped responding to it.”
“I mean, it’s sad to be away,” he added in a later interview with ScreenRant. “It’s sad to not be back with the band, but I’m sure they’re doing something incredible, and I’m sure it’s going to be that much harder when it comes out and you feel like you weren’t invited to the party.”
While Thanos’s return seems highly unlikely, when talking about the MCU, you never know — especially considering how enthusiastic Brolin is about returning to the series.
