For Sadie Robertson Huff, life works better without too many expectations.

“I did an ‘Ask Me Anything’ on Instagram the other day and someone said, ‘What are your non-negotiables in the morning?’” she recalled during an episode of her “WHOA That’s Good” podcast. “And I didn’t respond, but I wanted to say, ‘Don’t have non-negotiables,’ because rarely does it ever go as planned. Especially with us, with three kids.”

Huff explained that, if she insisted on non-negotiable things to happen each day in order for her to have a good day, “My days would not go well”

“I think, especially with kids, you learn that life doesn’t go as planned most of the time…you can’t control it,” she continued. “Surrender that control, especially as a mom.”

In her caption, Huff wrote, “Here’s the truth: when we hold our expectations too tightly, we set ourselves up for constant disappointment. Holding things loosely isn’t always easy, but it creates so much room to surrender control, trust God, and let grace lead the way.”

The DUCK DYNASTY star recently reflected on some of those moments where she had to let go of control in a post about a family vacation.

“It was such a fun trip, but also a hard one for parenting,” she wrote of the family beach trip, mentioning a colicky baby, kids recovering from “weeks of sickness” and “being in the thick of postpartum.”

“But you know what? The crying, the tantrums, the swimsuits, the lugging, etc are certainly not the main memories from this trip. I actually kind of laughed thinking back on it because those are the faintest of thoughts now,” Huff continued.

She wrote, “When I look back in my minds eye I see this….A time I got to sit and enjoy the girls playing, ice cream runs every single day, looking into my newborns eyes and waiting for the smallest smile, uninterrupted family time, my grandma braiding my daughters hair, Christian throwing the football, [and] card games…it was the best!”

Huff urged her followers to “enjoy the good things that are intermingled with the hard seasons because one day you might be looking back at pictures and be amazed when you have the faintest of memories about how hard that time really was,” adding, “And you’ll be glad you kept showing up anyways!”

Another way Huff stays grounded in hectic moments? Her faith.

“I cannot imagine the past six years of our life not being rooted in Jesus Christ, not having a foundation of faith that we both were able to come back to when we were both struggling, when we both were going through something that was crazy or wild,” she told husband Christian during a recent Q&A the couple did on her podcast.

While it can be difficult to let go of expectations, Huff’s recent comments are a reminder that life goes more smoothly when you surrender control.
