After months of rumors, Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler have officially joined the cast of an upcoming MIAMI VICE movie.
The movie, titled MIAMI VICE ‘85, will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, whose previous credits include TOP GUN: MAVERICK and F1. Butler will play James “Sonny” Crockett, while Jordan will take on the role of Ricardo Tubbs, roles originated by Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas, respectively.

Plot details are scarce, but Newsweek reported, “the film is inspired by the pilot and first season of the original show,” which follows Tubbs, an undercover detective from New York, as he heads to Miami to find Calderone, the drug kingpin who murdered his brother. There, he meets Detective Sonny Crockett, and the pair team up to take down the bad guy.
The movie has been in the works for some time now. In a 2025 appearance on Deadline’s “Behind the Lens” podcast, Kosinski said, “I can’t say too much [about MIAMI VICE ‘85] right now.”
“I’m excited, certainly excited about the possibility of it,” he continued. “I will say, you know, that show for me as a 10-year-old kid had as much influence, kind of on my desire to be a filmmaker, as any film did. Yeah. So I hope we can pull it together. It’s looking promising.”
Johnson weighed in on a potential reboot of MIAMI VICE in 2024, saying it would be “hard” to reboot the show.
“I didn’t hear the show, but there was a Joe Rogan show on not too long ago. A friend of mine told me he had heard it. Apparently, he and somebody else were singing my praises about how Sonny Crockett was the greatest character of all time, and there hasn’t been anyone before or since that has filled those shoes,” he told Collider, joking. “I’m not saying that, that’s Joe Rogan and somebody else.”
Johnson continued, “I feel that way about the period of time and the texture of the ’80s. It’s different now. It’s hard. It could be done. I have a plan for it, but there are so many people with their thumbs in the pie now and so many iterations that it’s hard to cut through all of that and really find the gem we found back then.”
MIAMI VICE ‘85 is set to hit theaters Aug. 6, 2027.
