Michael B. Jordan pointed the Academy Awards audience to God as he accepted the Oscar for Best Actor on Sunday.

“Man, God is good,” he began his acceptance speech. “God is good.”

“And yo, mama, what’s up?” Jordan continued, looking at his mother who he’d been sitting with when his win was announced. “Y’all know how how I feel about my mother, and my father’s here…My dad came in from Ghana. He flew in from Ghana to be here. My brother, my sister’s here, my family.”

The actor secured the win, his first Oscar, for his role in SINNERS, which Movieguide® advises extreme caution against.

“SINNERS is a metaphorical, racist horror movie claiming that white people always steal black folk music. This is false revisionist liberal/leftist history that dishonors the real history of popular American music, which has white European and country as well as black rhythm and blues roots,” Movieguide®’s -3 review reads. “SINNERS also has lots of strong gratuitous foul language, bloody violence and two brief sex scenes. It’s slightly mitigated, however, by some light Christian references to an afterlife and a gospel, biblical song.”

“Thank you for keeping betting on me, and I’mma keep stepping up, and I’mma keep being the best version of myself I could be,” Jordan concluded his acceptance speech. “So, I just want to say thank you for everybody in this room that had something to do with my success.”

The actor previously reflected on the impact his family and faith have had on his life.

“I have a really strong support system around me, family, friends that are like family,” Jordan told The Christian Post in 2018.

“I meditate a lot,” he added, saying, “spirituality is as big with me. It’s a big deal. It’s kind of what keeps me centered a lot of the times, so that’s definitely an aspect of my life that helps me push through certain hard times.”

In an article updated in 2020, he told Essence he’s “Spiritual. Hands down.”

“Grew up in church. I’ve always been the person to ask, ‘Why, why, why? Where’s the proof?’ I’ve always believed in a higher power, something bigger than myself. I think you would be foolish to not feel that way,” Jordan explained.

When it comes to his family, Jordan couldn’t be more grateful.

“My mom and dad sacrificed so much to provide for my sister, brother and me,” he said in 2020 of his mom, Donna Jordan, and dad, Michael A. Jordan. “I’m just grateful. Honestly, it’s like they all have had such an impact on me and who I am and how I approach each day. Without that, a lot of things about me just wouldn’t be the same. So it all comes back to that foundation. I’m really thankful for that.”

While we applaud Jordan’s comments about God and his love for his family, viewers need to be cautious when watching his projects, especially SINNERS. To see if a movie is appropriate for your family, check out movieguide.org.
