During a morning devotional, Kirk Cameron explained why our outward displays for God mean so much less compared to how we seek Him in our hearts.

“Sadly, many people are living a tiny, little, diminutive version of surface Christianity that we have been reduced to,” Cameron said. “You could read your Bible every day and read the Bible every single year and still be living for yourself. You could have perfect church attendance every Sunday…and still be living for yourself…You could have a PhD in theology of God’s word and still be living in a world where you’re consumed with what you want and how you feel…We could be doing all of these things and still have the trajectory of our life heading more towards self rather than the kingdom of God.”

To illustrate just how possible it is for someone to act holy on the outside but be rotten to the core, Cameron turned to the Bible and shared a story from the gospels when Jesus admonished the Pharisees for how they hijacked the faith.

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness,” Jesus said in Matthew 23:27-28.

Jesus knew that this would be a temptation for all at time as Satan does whatever he can to twist our beliefs and turn us from God. One of these tactics is to have people focus more on their actions than the heart behind what they do. For this reason, Jesus spoke often about the heart being the most important part of our faith.

Cameron and his sister Candace Cameron Bure previously reminded their fans of the importance of their inner life when discussing the difference between happiness and joy.

“I think it’s good to define the difference between joy and happiness,” Bure explained. “Joy is a goodness that comes from inside you, that sustains you when your circumstances around you are tough, are bad, when there are unhappy circumstances. Happiness is conditionally based.”

“Happiness means that the external things around you are going well, and that can change at any moment,” she added. “So it’s important when we talk about it, to know that there are many days that I may be unhappy because the things going on around me might not be great, but I still have joy inside of me because joy is never dependent upon my circumstances.”

As Cameron alluded to, many people today act holy but haven’t really given God their hearts. The best way to avoid becoming like this is to engage with the Lord and humbly submit to Him, rather than focusing on a list of rules and following those.
