Now a bonafide star, Glen Powell recalled how he wasn’t able to land a significant role in Hollywood until Chris Pratt changed the idea of what it meant to be a leading man.

“I remember when Chris Pratt broke out in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY,” Powell told GQ. “There’s no doubt it really helped – not being brooding or dark. Like, I’m not Christian Bale. Christian Bale has a gravitas and a weight, and [Robert] Pattinson had this thing.

“And when Pratt kind of appeared on the scene where he was doing thing that were a little more silly and buoyant, that’s where I feel most at home,” Powell continued. “And that’s where I feel like I had a gear that is a necessary flavor in terms of Hollywood, and not a gear that a lot of guys can play.”

While Powell has made a name for himself as an everyman, he, nonetheless, enjoys massive perks since becoming a star – for example, becoming friends with Tom Cruise, who is a mentor to him. However, the actor stays grounded as well, keeping a pulse on what America truly wants, rather than selling out to Hollywood.

“Having grown up in and around Texas, I’m aware there are vast parts of America that have been underserved in terms of movies that they want to see,” Powell told The Telegraph in 2024. “You sort of have New York and Los Angeles making the decisions about what gets made, but there’s a whole lot more audience out there you need to think about.”

Powell left LA and moved back to Texas to get away from the toxic nature of the entertainment industry. At the same time, he returned to college to complete a major in Spanish and early American studies.

“I think it’s really important to my mom and it’s more of an emotional thing for me,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “Plus, I’m so close, I can taste it.

“No matter where I am in the world, I have never missed watching a Texas-OU game,” he told students during a keynote address in 2023. “My grandparents met on this campus. My parents are both Longhorns. My sister’s a Longhorn. My cousins are Longhorns.”

Actors like Pratt and Powell prove that everyman personalities have star power. Better yet, they, in many ways, they live lives that resemble something like the public’s, rather than extreme extravagance that nobody can relate to.
