DC Universe architect James Gunn shared exciting new details about the SUPERMAN sequel, including when filming is expected to start and a broad overview of the movie’s plot.
“It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” Gunn told The Howard Stern Show, per Variety. “It’s more complicated than that but that’s a big part of it. It’s as much a Lex Luthor movie as it is a Superman movie. I loved working with Nicholas Hoult [who played Luther in the first movie]. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.”
While the shift of Luthor being Superman’s sworn enemy to becoming a reluctant partner is surprising, it also fits the bill for the Gunn-led DC Universe as he looks to shake up the stories we know and bring new life into them. Gunn shared that at this point, he has nearly finished the script for the movie and plans to begin filming soon.

“That was at the beginning when I took on DC and I promised myself I’m slowing down at least a tiny bit. Although I am creating the SUPERMAN sequel that we’re starting to shoot in April or so…I’m done writing that for the most part,” Gunn said.
This gives the movie a little over a year for production as SUPERMAN: MAN OF TOMORROW is already slated to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. This fast production cycle and relatively quick turnaround from releasing the first movie and beginning work on its sequel comes after Gunn received high praise from Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav after SUPERMAN proved to be a hit in theaters.
“Three years ago, I hired James Gunn and Peter Safran to reimagine and unify the creative direction of DC under one leadership team, by breathing new life and excitement into one of the most iconic storytelling franchises in the world,” Zaslav said in early August. “James and Peter’s commitment to honoring the legacy of the DC Universe while forging something new and enthralling is inspiring.”
“Over the next year alone, DC Studios will introduce the films SUPERGIRL and CLAYFACE in theaters and the series LANTERNS on HBO Max, all part of a bold 10-year plan,” Zaslav added. “The DC vision is clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead.”
Fans already have much to look forward to in the revived DC Universe, and Gunn will make things even more exciting as he brings new twists to the stories and characters that already have a long history.
