The New York Giants named Jameis Winston their third-string quarterback behind Russell Wilson and Jaxson Dart, but he’s still “grateful” for his role on the team.

“As a competitor, you want to be the starter. But I prepare to be the starter, I know I’m a starter in this league,” Winston said in a locker room interview. “But you have to be able to be grateful for your role…my role right now is to assist Russ and Jaxson to be the best that they can be while preparing to be the best that I can be.”

The quarterback signed with the Giants in March of this year. He previously played five seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, followed by four with the New Orleans Saints and one last year with the Cleveland Browns.

“No matter if I’m 3, 33, this is my first year being number 19, so it’s always a first for everything,” he said. “I focus on what I would love. And what I would love is for this team to have success.”

Not only does he pour into his team, but the athlete wants to help children and up-and-coming athletes, too, through his Dream Forever foundation.

“The purpose of his foundation is to have a positive impact on the lives of financially disadvantaged children by providing encouragement, opportunities, and resources which enable the discovery, development, and eventually the achievement of their dreams,” Dream Forever’s website explains. He started the foundation to “”teach children the importance of working hard, having a positive attitude and being a team player so that they can ultimately achieve their DREAM FOREVER.”

Over the summer, Winston, who writes “God 1st!” in his Instagram bio, hosted a football camp through Dream Forever.

“I am so happy and grateful that our young athletes showed up and showed out,” he posted on Instagram along with photos from the camp. “Leadership is influence! Thank you to my team, alma mater, and all our sponsors for making this all possible!”

Winston also found out that he will be inducted into the Florida State University Football Hall of Fame this upcoming year.

“At Florida State, if we gonna do it then, we do it big then. I am so happy and grateful to be going into the FSU Hall of Fame. Noles forever!” he announced on social media.

Whether Winston is leading his team on the field, in the weight room, at practice or from the sidelines, he has learned to be content in whatever role he gets to play.
