Paramount announced some of the movies it has planned for 2028, and its list includes entries into the SONIC and TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLE (TMNT) franchises, along with a re-release of TOP GUN.
“With 30-plus years of characters in the SONIC library, it’s always so exciting to tease new characters at the end of each film,” director Jeff Fowler told The Hollywood Reporter last December when the third movie was coming out. “Bringing new characters can really push us in new directions, and it is very exciting.”

During the post-credits scenes of the third movie, Amy Rose and Metal Sonic were both introduced to audiences. These characters will likely play a major role in the fourth movie in the franchise, which is set to release in March 2027. The characters introduced in this movie may be the stars of the newly announced untitled movie coming in 2028, especially given that it was teased as being a part of the SONIC franchise, rather than a direct follow up to SONIC 4.
The movie also has the potential to expand the story of a current character in the franchise in the same way that Paramount dove into Knuckles’ backstory through the Paramount+ show KNUCKLES.
As for TMNT, plot details are just as under wraps as the SONIC movie, but the studio has at least revealed that the upcoming entry into the series will be live-action – a slightly surprising decision given the success of 2023’s animated TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM. Despite moving in a different direction with the franchise, hopefully the producers will keep the next movie as uplifting and family-friendly as MUTANT MAYHEM was. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM tells a rousing, funny story, with a unique animated look. The characters sometimes talk over one another too much, however. MUTANT MAYHEM has a strong morally uplifting worldview. The stepfather of the four turtles has a strong fatherly concern for them and their wellbeing. The movie also promotes doing the right thing. MUTANT MAYHEM has some intense violence, scary creatures and foul language. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.
Finally, Paramount also revealed that it will be bringing TOP GUN back to theaters in 2028 to celebrate the movie’s 50th anniversary. This comes after the success of the second movie and plans to create a third movie for the franchise.
While some of these movies are still three years away, Paramount is already making 2028 exciting for its audiences as some of its most beloved franchises will be bringing new stories to the big screen.
