Reckless Love” singer Cory Asbury ditched the country album he was working on to obey what the Lord told him to do.

“I’ve spent the last five years working on a country record. Recently, the Lord has met me and said, ‘Hey, that’s not it,’ And that’s a humbling thing when you’ve spent time and energy, and you know, years of your life going after it, but who cares if it’s humble?” Asbury shared in a video on social media.

“If that’s what He’s asking you to do, that’s what you do. You throw it all away, and you go, okay, I’m gonna do what I’m supposed to do, I’m gonna be who I’m supposed to be, and what the Lord’s created me to be is a worshiper, is a leader of worship, is a leader of men and women into that space of intimacy with Him. That’s the only thing that matters,” he explained.

In another video three weeks ago, Asbury went more in depth into the moment when God called him to give up the 20-track country album, which was nearly finished.

shared another video where he discussed what really urged him to ditch the 20-track country album, which was nearly finished, to pursue God’s calling for his life.

“I had taken a $500,000 advance for a 20-song album, and it was like pretty much done. Boom, I get blasted by the Lord,” Asbury described. “We’re sitting in John Foreman from Switchfoot’s studio. The Lord whispers to my spirit instantly and says, ‘Be done, stop running, move on to what you’re supposed to do, what you were made to do, what you were created to do.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, dang.’ So I texted [wife] Anna…I said, ‘I think this is what the Lord is speaking. We’re gonna probably have to give back the money.’ She was like, ‘Absolutely, 100%.'”

“That’s His whisper. You know, I call my label, talk to them, and they were like, ‘This is crazy,'” he recalled before discussing his upcoming record, Outsing the Angels.

“This record is beautiful. It feels like a call back to youth and zeal, and that passion that you used to feel as a kid. Go to youth group, and you just scream those worship songs at the top of your lungs, because you were just so passionately in love with God, and there was nothing in the way. You didn’t have years of jadedness,” the singer said.

“And my hope is a lot of y’all who have been following along prodigal parts of my story, where I was running — I had taken my inheritance, and I was going to do my thing — I’m hoping that you guys can grab ahold of this record and this move of God and be like, ‘Okay, there’s hope for me,'” Asbury said. “I’ve been in those dark places of folks who have been like, ‘Screw the church.’ They can look at this and go, ‘Okay, God could do that for me.’ That’s my hope, and that’s my belief.”

Asbury released Outsing the Angels‘ title track last week. The full album drops Sept. 18.
