For LOVE ON THE SPECTRUM’s Tanner Smith, faith is something he leans on in tough times.

“[My relationship with God] began when I was 11,” he said during an appearance on “The Jesus People Podcast.” “I  was 11 when I became a Christian. We were at the beach before my fifth grade year, and that night we were on the beach, I asked Jesus, ‘I want to accept you in my heart, and I believe that you died on the cross for our sins, and I love you.’”

His mom Nicci chimed in: “It’s like the moment you pray for, right?”

Smith shared that his faith is something he relies on when things get hard, reflecting, “I see that God loves me and He can forgive me when I do wrong…because He loves us. And I know whenever I’m upset or anxious and I have a bad day, I say, ‘Jesus, help me.’”

“I say, ‘Jesus and God are always with me, and sometimes when we have bad days…we just gotta go through rough times and move on,’” he added.

The reality star previously spoke about his Christian faith. During another conversation with Christian podcaster Ryan Smith, he explained that he once thought just “being good does get you to Heaven.”

Smith shared that he later learned you also “have to accept Jesus in your heart. You have to know that He died on the cross for our sins,” and share the gospel with others.

Many LOVE ON THE SPECTRUM fans were disappointed to hear Smith decided to leave the show after its third season, but he explained his choice in an April Instagram post.

“LOVE ON THE SPECTRUM was one of the most amazing things that ever happened in my life. It changed everything for me and I’ve done things that I never thought I’d get to do but I have figured something out about myself and I want to tell you what it is,” he said. “Guys, I’m not ready for a serious relationship and I’m definitely not ready to get married yet. And since that’s my truth … it wouldn’t be fair or honest for me to be on a show about dating.”

He continued, “I figured out that I want to travel, I have big dreams and I’m not ready to be somebody’s boyfriend so that is the honest reason why I’m not on season 4.”

Fans of Smith are happy to hear that he has his faith to lean on when things get difficult.
