MONK star Tony Shalhoub is heading back to the small screen.

The Emmy-winning actor just joined CBS’ upcoming drama-comedy EINSTEIN as a “recurring guest star.”

“EINSTEIN stars Matthew Gray Gubler as Lewis Einstein, the brilliant but directionless great grandson of Albert Einstein,” the show’s synopsis reads. “Einstein spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor until his reckless antics land him in trouble with the law, and he is pressed into service helping a local police detective (Melissa Fumero) solve her most puzzling cases.”

Shalhoub will play Lewis’ dad, Jack Einstein, Deadline reported. Aunjanue Ellis Taylor is also part of the cast.

Shalhoub’s role sees him reunite with MONK creator and executive producer Andy Breckman as well as EP Randy Zisk.

Melissa Fumero celebrated her role on the series in a March Instagram post.

“Soooo excited to join this series! Matthew is a dream partner as is this whole team! Thank you @cbstv for having me. Can’t wait for you guys to see Einstein! Here we goooooo!!” she said.

Fumero and Matthew Gray Gubler believe they work well together.

While at CBS Fest, Gubler shared that the duo had been working together for “eleven and a half days, but it feels like eleven and a half centuries.”

Fumero chimed in, “Yeah, that is crazy to me, yeah. We clicked right away, and I knew I pretty much from the chemistry read that I was like, ‘I would have fun working with this person and spending long days with them,’ so it’s just been an awesome experience, and I feel so lucky.”

The new series is set to premiere January 2027. EINSTEIN was originally supposed to air last year, but CBS pushed back the release due to a full 2025-2026 schedule, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Many fans still love Shalhoub for his role as Adrian Monk on MONK, which aired for eight seasons from 2002-2009. A description of the series reads, “Adrian Monk is a brilliant former San Francisco detective, who now consults the police as a private consultant while battling with an obsessive-compulsive disorder.”

In recent years, the franchise returned with the Peacock reunion movie MR. MONK’S LAST CASE: A MONK MOVIE, which reunited much of the original cast.

Deadline reported, “Shalhoub received three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. His fourth Emmy win was for his supporting actor work on the Prime Video series THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL.”

Stay tuned for more updates about EINSTEIN.
