The highly-anticipated MINECRAFT MOVIE sequel finally has its title.
“Ready for another adventure?” the movie’s Instagram account posted. “The world of #Minecraft is expanding once again with A MINECRAFT MOVIE SQUARED!”
Jared Hess will be returning to direct the MINECRAFT sequel, with cast members Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Coolidge all reprising their roles. Kirsten Dunst will also join the cast.
Hess spoke to Deadline in 2025 about what inspired him to take on A MINECRAFT MOVIE, sharing that he knew about Minecraft, the popular online game the movie is based on, because his children played it.

“They were in elementary school and just would have a riot playing the game, and so I had to jump in and join the party,” he said.
When asked to comment on the movie’s popularity — A MINECRAFT MOVIE made a little over $960 million at the box office, per Box Office Mojo — Hess said, “It’s one of those things. There was an immense audience that was so passionate about the game and for whom Minecraft was such a key part of their childhood adolescence, just something that they loved.”
“The game itself is so creative, but it’s also ridiculous and really funny and absurd in so many ways,” he added. “That was so much of the appeal to me in adapting it.”
Momoa made similar comments when speaking to Today’s Parent, saying he “knew of” Minecraft before signing on to the project but “never played it before.”
“[A friend] explained it to me and just said, at the root of it, it’s just about protecting imagination. And I can relate to that,” he continued.
Hess also teased the sequel, saying, “Well, it would be so much fun. We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to. I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.”
A MINECRAFT MOVIE SQUARED is scheduled to hit theaters July 23, 2027.
