After joking last summer about joining the sequel to A MINECRAFT MOVIE, Kirsten Dunst is now confirmed to actually be joining the project.
“Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money,” Dunst joked with Town & Country last August, also noting that her kids loved the first MINECRAFT movie.
It seems that Dunst got the last laugh as she is now confirmed to join the sequel to last year’s blockbuster hit. In October, Legendary and Warner Bros. revealed A MINECRAFT MOVIE 2 will hit theaters July 23, 2027.

A MINECRAFT MOVIE was one of 2025’s most successful movies, grossing just shy of $1 billion at the global box office. The movie continued the trend of video game adaptations finding success in theaters, especially when they stay true to their family audience and include an uplifting story. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
A MINECRAFT MOVIE is a funny, light-hearted tale with deep meaning. It has a strong redemptive, morally uplifting worldview where people find meaning, strength, love, and courage in friendship to fight evil. A once self-absorbed character risks his life to save his friend. The evil queen says to hope, dream and create is to suffer, but the hero rebukes her by telling her that cowards choose to destroy things because it’s easier. A MINECRAFT MOVIE has lots of action violence, some light foul and crude language, rude humor and some scary images. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children and young teenagers.
The creators of A MINECRAFT MOVIE were particularly interested in remaining faithful to their source material and releasing a story that players could relate to, rather than hijacking the iconic game for a story that did not reflect gameplay.
“These moments like A MINECRAFT MOVIE are examples of respecting community, [and] making sure they feel respected and heard through the products that we build,” Microsoft’s — who owns Minecraft — chief of gaming, Phil Spencer, told Variety. “We do it in gaming, but it’s something that the whole company aspires to be.”
“The game itself is so creative, but it’s also ridiculous and really funny and absurd in so many ways. That was so much of the appeal to me in adapting it,” added director Jared Hess. “It was like, how can you just do a ridiculously fun and funny adventure movie in this world — all of those goofy, dorky things we just really tried to celebrate and were super conscious of while making it?”
Hess has signed on to direct the second movie, giving fans confidence that it will follow in the footsteps of the first. While little has been shared about the sequel, it is fun to get an idea of how the world will expand through the addition of actors like Dunst.
