10 Movies That Teach Children the Importance of Obedience

By Movieguide Contributor

The Bible says in 1 John 2:5-6, “But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.” Children need to learn the importance of obedience. What better way to teach them this value than watching a movie on the topic? From a little fish facing big consequences in FINDING NEMO to Joseph obeying the Lord in JOSEPH: KING OF DREAMS, children will grasp the concept of obedience from these films.

CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is a wondrously quirky and heartwarming adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book about poor Charlie Bucket’s fantastic, life-changing visit to Willy Wonka’s amazing candy factory. The movie imparts many positive moral messages, not the least of which is the fact that having a loving family is the best reward of all.

EVAN ALMIGHTY

EVAN ALMIGHTY stars Steve Carell as Evan Baxter, the anchorman from BRUCE ALMIGHTY, who has become a U.S. Congressman, but sees his political career put on hold when God commands Evan to build an ark. EVAN ALMIGHTY is a funny, heartwarming family movie with a thrilling ending that makes up for the movie’s theological mis-steps, such as the important fact that the movie does not make it clear that, when God appears to us in human form, he always appears as Jesus Christ as noted in John 1.

A magnificent example of Disney animation, THE LION KING is an heroic tale of good versus evil which embodies many Christian allegorical elements. The sinister usurper Scar plots to kill his brother and nephew so he can become King himself. While there are several minor areas which call for discernment in THE LION KING, the good far outweighs the bad, and the film conveys a clear message of hope, reconciliation and appreciation for the majesty of creation.
