While Aardman Animations fans have often wondered why Shaun the Sheep has never fully crossed over with Wallace and Gromit, creator Nick Park explained that this is because the two franchises now live in very different worlds.

Shaun originally appeared in the Wallace and Gromit short A CLOSE SHAVE in 1995.

It introduced Shaun as a “one-off” supporting character, wandering into Wallace and Gromit’s lives “in the midst of a sheep-rustling operation, for which Gromit was framed. In reality, the culprit was the much more malevolent mechanical mutt, Preston. Shaun helped Wallace break Gromit out of prison and put a stop to Preston’s plans to turn the sheep – and Wallace and Gromit – into dog food,” per TV Line.

He quickly gained his own popularity, and the titular sheep went on to star in a long-running television series and two successful movies, with a third, SHAUN THE SHEEP: THE BEAST OF MOSSY BOTTOM, scheduled for release in 2026. Meanwhile, Wallace and Gromit continued as a separate franchise, most recently returning in the 2024 movie VENGEANCE MOST FOWL.

“With Wallace and Gromit, everything’s a bit retro. They rarely have a TV on…They don’t have mobile phones and they don’t really have computers, but if they do, they’re like antiques. SHAUN THE SHEEP is more flexible in terms of the modern world,” Park said about why the two can’t cross over. “There’s social media and you can dial for pizza!”

SHAUN THE SHEEP: THE BEAST OF MOSSY BOTTOM is now set to release this fall.

The new movie has been acquired by Gkids.

“We are so excited! I have been an Aardman super-fan since the earliest days of the studio, from the Academy Award–winning Creature Comforts and original Wallace & Gromit shorts, through REX THE RUNT, CHICKEN RUN, WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT, and of course the beloved Shaun the Sheep,” Eric Beckman, founder and CEO of Gkids, said in a statement.

He added, “For decades, Aardman has forged a unique place in the hearts of fans by infusing so much love, humor, and humanity into the hand-crafted art of stop-motion. Aardman is absolutely one-of-a-kind and we could not be more thrilled to be working together at long last.”

Studiocanal celebrated their partnership with Gkids, saying, “We are so delighted to announce today that Shaun the Sheep is ready for his next big U.S. adventure, and STUDIOCANAL couldn’t ask for a better partner than GKIDS to make it happen. Their passion and expertise in animation make them the ideal home for Shaun and his very welcome return to the big screen in 2026.”

Shaun the Sheep turned 30 in December, which Aardman Animations celebrated on Instagram.

“30 years ago this week, Shaun the Sheep made his debut appearance in A CLOSE SHAVE in 1995!” they wrote.

While fans likely won’t ever see Shaun the Sheep meet up with Wallace and Gromit again, it looks like the future for both franchises is bright.
