WALLACE & GROMIT: VENGEANCE MOST FOWL is a very funny British humor movie with scary detective story elements. It’s great for slightly older children, but younger children will get scared. The music is especially scary using familiar musical tropes.
In the beginning, Feathers McGraw has stolen the Blue Diamond. However, Wallace and his dog, Gromit, trap him and turn him over to the police, who put him in maximum security, which, since he’s a penguin, is a zoo. Now, Feathers McGrew wants vengeance on Wallace and Gromit. Meanwhile, the aging police chief, who wants to retire on a canal barge, and his young assistant policewoman, who’s learning the ropes, commend Wallace and Gromit.
Wallace, in case you forgot, is an inventor and has his whole house automated. So, his inventions wake him up and wake Gromit up, toss him into his bath, slide him down into a room where the inventions put on his clothes, and send him to the breakfast table, where the inventions make tea and toast. Gromit is not quite as happy with the inventions as Wallace is, since the inventions often make mistakes, like pouring the milk for his cereal on his head. Even so, Gromit loves Wallace and seems to have more wisdom, even though Wallace is a great inventor.
One day, Gromit is taking care of his garden and planting a new little tree. This is Gromit’s escape from the inventions. Wallace brings out his latest invention, Norbot, a gnome robot that thinks and responds to voice commands. Wallace tells Norbot to make his yard neat and tidy. NORBOT does so with a vengeance, mowing down flowers, cutting trees into strange shapes and cutting down the tree Gromit just planted
Meanwhile, at the zoo, Feathers McGraw is figuring out how to escape. He develops a mechanical arm that lets him use the zookeeper’s computer to link to Wallace’s computer and turn Norbot from good to evil. Before he was evil, everyone in the neighborhood wanted to use Norbot to take care of their yards. Now that he’s evil, Norbot takes a lot of their tools and yard equipment to build what Norbot needs to make hundreds of Norbots and build a submarine to go through the sewer pipes to help Feathers McGraw escape. The neighbors think Wallace and Gromit have stolen all their stuff. The police come after them, although the young policewoman thinks the real culprit is Feathers McGraw.
Jeopardy builds to a crescendo for Wallace and Gromit. Gromit realizes what’s happening, though Wallace doesn’t. Gromit does what he can to save the day. A tremendous chase ensues. Feathers escapes the zoo and steals a canal barge. Wallace and Gromit follow in the police chief’s canal barge. The chief and the policewoman follow them chasing Feathers McGraw, who seems to have the blue diamond.
WALLACE & GROMIT: VENGEANCE MOST FOWL combines a lot of classic detective story elements in a very funny, entertaining way. The chase scene seems to be adapted from the last MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie. Except for the train, it’s canal barges. Other elements resemble the GET SMART spy sitcom, Agatha Christie and other wonderful film noirs and detective stories. The animals of course are not dressed, but there’s no foul language, no drugs or alcohol use, and the violence is comical cartoon slapstick violence and pretty funny.
The movie isn’t for children under six years old, however, because it’s made in such a way that’s too scary, though the scares turn out to be humorous. For older children, however, it’s a very entertaining movie, especially for adults. Perhaps there’s those who don’t like British humor, but for those who have a funny bone, WALLACE & GROMIT: VENGEANCE MOST FOWL is very funny.
