Actor Describes Harrowing Experience Helping People in LA Fires

As fires rage in Los Angeles, some people are stepping up to help those in need, including actor Steve Guttenberg.
In a video posted by Good Morning America, Guttenberg shared video footage of the horrific fires and urged people to help.
“Everything was on fire. On both sides, and I was the only car there and I couldn’t see more than three feet in front of my car, the smoke was so thick,” he said of his own experience. “It looked like a volcano was on the sides of the hills…and all of a sudden people were just fleeing… two miles of cars packed. The fires, they started with these little circles of red, like little devils. Before you knew it, the wind, which is the strongest wind you’ve ever seen, I mean it’s 80 miles an hour, and it started just spreading all these little pockets of burning embers. Before you knew it, the whole hill was on fire.”

The scene was so tragic that Guttenberg questioned if he would survive.
“I never think ‘I’m going to die,’ but this is one of those moments when I said, ‘oh man, this could be the one, this could be the place that I’m going to go,’” he explained.
He then shared an important tip for those who are unfortunately forced to abandon their cars to escape.
“The police were telling people to leave their cars. And the reason I want to be on the air is to tell people in a crisis if you abandon your car in the street, leave your keys in the car so guys like me can move your car, so fire trucks can get in there,” he explained.
Guttenberg also urged those who can help others to do so.
“If you’re able bodied, make sure you can help people,” he pleaded. “There are people in wheelchairs, there are older people who can’t get anywhere. They have to walk down hills, they need help. Little kids, mothers having anxiety attacks, panic attacks. You need to stay behind and need to help them.”
There are currently seven major wildfires, some of which began Tuesday morning. Fox News reported as of Thursday morning, “The Palisades Fire, the Eaton Fire, the Hurst Fire, the Lidia Fire and the Sunset Fire are all raging in Los Angeles County as of Wednesday, according to CAL FIRE. The Eaton Fire has claimed at least five lives and is at 0% containment as of Wednesday night. The Palisades Fire is also at 0% containment.”
“Hundreds of thousands of residents are under evacuation orders as the LA area wildfires threaten at least 28,000 structures,” the outlet added.
Over 3 million people are also without power due to the tragedy.
