Actress Angelina Jolie Says Her Kids Give Her Strength

By Jessilyn Lancaster, Managing Editor

Actress Angelina Jolie says she draws her strength from the love of her six children.

Jolie, who plays the titular character in MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL, says that before she returned to the sequel, she was feeling, “Broken” after her divorce from fellow A-lister Brad Pitt.

“It was a tough time,” Jolie told PEOPLE magazine. “I’d been coming off a few years of difficulty, and I was not feeling very strong. In fact, I was feeling pretty broken.”

Yet, the love of her children and for her children sustains her.

Jolie channeled this strength for MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL’s redemptive elements about self-sacrifice.

“I think the core of it is we’re not here just to exist,” Jolie said. “You have to know what you stand for. You have to know what you’re willing to fight for, even die for. If you live that way, in whatever pain comes with it, whatever sacrifice comes with it, you embrace it, and it actually fills you with purpose. I think that’s the hope represented in the movie.”

Movieguide® rated the original MALEFICENT, as well as its sequel, as -2, which merits extreme caution and told parents the movie was too scary for small children, despite its PG rating.

Her father, John Voight, attended the MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL red carpet premiere and called his daughter, “very strong.”

“She has a certain persona that is hers alone, and she sits in it very comfortably,” Voight said.

Voight also attended the 2019 Movieguide® Awards and called mothers a “gift from God.”

Jolie split from ex-husband, Brad Pitt, more than three years ago.

The couple did not profess to be Christians, but Pitt recently admitted that he is no longer an atheist and only told media he didn’t believe in God to appear “rebellious.”
