Al Roker Enjoys First Father’s Day as a Grandparent

Ahead of Father’s Day, Al Roker shared his plans for the first celebration since becoming a grandparent — a role he has enjoyed for almost a year.
“The best part of Father’s Day this year is that I’m a grandfather,” Roker told TODAY. “It’s pure joy. There’s no responsibility, other than you want them to be safe and happy. I don’t have to teach her anything.”
“We sit. We talk,” Roker continued, explaining the things he likes to do with his granddaughter. “We just got the baby life preserver. We’re going out on the pontoon boat.”
“I just had this block set that was Leila’s and Nick’s later. I had this guy sand them down, clean them up,” Roker added, describing a gift he recently gave. “This past weekend she was playing with them. It was like: The circle remains unbroken.”
Sky was born last July to Roker’s daughter Courtney Roker Laga and her husband, Wesley Laga. Since being born, she has been Roker’s inspiration. Last November, he credited her with being his biggest motivation amid a flurry of healthy struggles.
“I’m doing great, doing great,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “I tell you, the thing that’s kept me going is I’ve had a new granddaughter… If I had known they were this much fun, I would’ve had them first. It’s the best.”
“It is magical, it really its. The thing is, everyone tells you it’s going to be ‘this thing’ and you don’t know; it’s like when they tell you about having your first child. And then to hold this little girl, knowing almost 35 years ago I held her mom? And here she is, 5 lbs., 15 oz. 19 inches long and she’s just perfect,” he added.
As Sky nears her first birthday and starts to become verbal, Roker is excited for the day he can have a full-blown conversation with her and get to know her better.
“It’s all babble, but it’s like she’s talking. This is me in five years anyway,” Roker said. “She and I will be speaking the same language.”
