Amazon Corrects Prime Video Subscription Cancellation Rumor

By Movieguide® Contributor

After Amazon got wind of an erroneous Cord Busters report, it confirmed that the company does, in fact, still offer a Prime Video subscription service for non-prime members.

“Amazon has disputed Cord Busters’ report, and confirmed the Prime Video-only plan is still available in the US as a standalone, $8.99 monthly subscription,” Engadget reported on April 19.

Engadget previously reported, “Those trying to sign up for the previously $8.99 monthly plan (£5.99 monthly in the UK) are now directed to the landing page for a full Amazon Prime membership.”

When it recently couldn’t be found, Cord Busters concluded that the subscription had been discarded.

The service launched in 2016 when Netflix offered a $9.99 standard HD streaming service for two devices. While Amazon has kept the service around for the last eight years, it has always proved hard to find and, apparently, still is.

It was “impossible to sign up for on mobile devices,” Engadget said. “It was also increasingly difficult to find on desktops, where you had to navigate to an easy-to-miss ‘See more plans’ section of the Prime sign-up page.”

Now, the subscription cannot be accessed directly through the main sign-up page or other pages but only through the Prime Video sign-up process. Cord Busters says this only makes the service even harder to find as the company tries to point customers toward its more expensive Amazon Prime Membership.

Movieguide® recently reported on Prime Video:

In an annual letter to shareholders, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy lauded Prime Video for successfully introducing ads and reaching 200 million monthly viewers.

“Recently, we’ve expanded our streaming TV advertising by introducing ads into Prime Video shows and movies, where brands can reach over 200 million monthly viewers in our most popular entertainment offerings, across hit movies and shows, award-winning Amazon MGM Originals, and live sports like THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL,” Jassy said. “Streaming TV advertising is growing quickly and off to a strong start.”

Ads were introduced to Prime Video at the end of January, with Prime subscribers offered the option to remove them for an additional $2.99 per month. In total, the introduction of ads is expected to generate an additional $3 billion for Amazon in 2024, rising to over $7 billion by 2026.
