SUPERMAN star David Corenswet recently opened up about a movie that had a “profound impact” on him: 2008’s BOLT.
“So that was one of the first movies that I watched when streaming was becoming a thing, and I was like discovering the Netflix catalog of these sorts of more obscure films that were on streaming,” he said in a recent interview with Sirius XM. “And I remember watching BOLT, and I was in high school. I was a young man, and there was something about it. I haven’t seen it in a while, but it happened again the second time I saw BOLT. I cried at the same moment, or I teared up at the same moment.”
The animated movie follows “The canine star of a fictional sci-fi/action show that believes his powers are real [as he] embarks on a cross country trek to save his co-star from a threat he believes is just as real,” per IMDB.
Corenswet explained that there’s a moment in the movie when Bolt, who thinks he’s a superdog even though everyone else knows otherwise, really becomes a hero.
“I’m getting chills just describing it,” the actor said. “He runs back into a burning building or stands his ground against a big threat, and that spirit of somebody who doesn’t know that they’re not up to the task believing in themselves and taking on great danger in that moment — not because they believe in themselves, but because they haven’t been told that they can’t do it — …I think that feeling and that persistence and perseverance, it’s just it’s it’s the same feeling I get when I watch APOLLO 13 or 13 LIVES.”
He continued, “Just when vulnerable, fallible people or dogs muster up the courage to put themselves at risk and to go back out there and help others, stand up for others, that always makes me feel good and gets me.”
Movieguide® praised BOLT’s many redemptive qualities, giving it a +3 content score and selecting it as one of Movieguide®’s best movies for families. Part of the review reads:
BOLT is the first movie that totally integrates the talents of Disney and Pixar. The Pixar touch is clearly apparent. It is good, wholesome fun from beginning to end. All the elements work together – jeopardy, danger, comedy, character, and a great deal of adorable love between Bolt and Penny. The animation is captivating, the characters are endearing, and all the elements come together seamlessly to produce one of the best movies of the year.
The impact BOLT had on Corenswet’s life reveals just how powerful quality stories with redemptive themes can be.
