Brandon Lake never thought he would be one to struggle with mental health issues — until he was.
“I would never claim to say I battle like mental health and depression and anxiety, but I came off of my very first tour, and I experienced some of that for the very first time,” Lake explained at the 12th Annual K-LOVE Fan Awards. “And I didn’t realize the mental, physical, emotional, spiritual toll that just traveling and expending all of your adrenaline can do to you.”
The “Hard Fought Hallelujah” singer explained that surprisingly enough, it wasn’t difficult moments that took a toll on him but rather the positive ones.
He explained, “So I came home and kind of had a freak-out moment, even though all my dreams were coming true. And so, my lowest moment didn’t come because all bad things were happening; it was actually because there were so many amazing things happening.”
Lake shared that sometimes we have to choose worship even when our feelings say otherwise: “Like David did in the Bible…he commanded his soul to bless God. Sometimes you got to do that,” referring to Psalm 103:1-2, which reads, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”
“You know, sometimes it’s some of the most precious and pure worship comes through a hard-fought moment, you know? And commanding your soul to do the very thing that you don’t want to do,” the worship artist added.
Lake also discussed how he wants to use his calling of leading worship for as long as God allows.
“I decided I wanted to dedicate my life ,if this is the gift that He’s given me, I want to use it for the rest of my life to change the world and to grow the kingdom,” he said.

And that’s exactly what Lake is doing.
Currently he is preparing to release his newest album King of Hearts on June 13.
In a post to Instagram, he said, “I’m not sure if I knew who this record was for when I started writing it, but as the songs came the more I realized it was not for the seemingly put together, but rather those who are honest about their brokenness, but also have a desire to connect with their creator and experience Him in everyday life.”
Brandon Lake’s journey reminds us choosing God’s calling for our lives may not be easy, but it’s always worth it.
