While many believe a radical transformation is a more powerful testimony than a lifelong walk with God, worship artist Brandon Lake believes being a lifelong Christian is just as impactful of a story.

“My dad’s a pastor, I’m a PK, grew up in a church plant in Myrtle Beach and then we moved to Charleston and I found my calling — worship in music — when I was 12 or 13, and I’ve really been doing that ever since. I started writing songs at 15, 16 and still get to do that now,” Lake told TBN’s Eric Metaxas.

“I always felt like, man, I don’t have a testimony, until I realized, I don’t know, you could probably argue who has been shown more grace: the person who fell away that God brought back or the person that God has kept and protected, somehow,” Lake added. “And I’ve had my moments, trust me, but I’ve definitely been on a path to where I’ve tried to be as faithful as I can. And I’ve had a lot of help from friends and pastors as well.”

This long walk with the Lord has given Lake the ability to write songs that might not be possible for someone who has recently had a radical encounter with faith. Instead, his songs often focus on the joy of everyday life with the Lord, as well as the battles He fights with us and for us over the years. Furthermore, he has still had struggles that the Lord has delivered him from, such as anxiety and depression that came upon him after he began to gain fame.

“In my lifetime, I’ve never experienced more opportunity to cave under the weight of anxiety and depression,” Lake said in 2022 after the release of his EP “HELP!”

“I believe it’s important that we are real, honest, and raw about the mental battles we face — that we bring them into the light so God can remind us of who He is and who we are,” he said. “I believe we need honest songs, but we also need warfare songs to come against those attacks that try and keep us from being everything God wants us to be and from living truly free. Freedom has been purchased, but we need reminders that it is our inheritance and the reality we can live in daily through Him who set us free.”

Lake’s life is a great example of the Lord’s faithfulness, and the artist continues to point to this blessing through his music, allowing his fans to better understand what a lifelong walk with Jesus looks like.
