LILO & STITCH 2 is on its way following the first live-action installment’s massive success.
Chris Sanders, who created of the original 2002 version and voiced the beloved Stitch, will return to write the upcoming sequel.
During a recent Comic Con panel, 63-year-old Sanders revealed he has “begun writing” the next movie, calling it “good” and saying that he likes it.
LILO & STITCH was the first movie of 2025 to surpass $1 billion at the worldwide box office. To date, the film has made over $400 million domestically.
Deadline reported that the franchise made over $2.5 billion from consumer products alone and that it was “one of 11 evergreen Disney franchises that surpassed $1 billion-plus in retail sales in 2024.”
Sanders is excited for the sequel, recently telling Hawaii Public Radio how much he loves creating redemption stories.
“In those dark moments, you can still see where you’re headed and the movie that’s in your head; I will do anything to get there and get it done,” he said. “I will get that movie on screen because I want people to see what I’m seeing. That mother’s story inside THE WILD ROBOT, the redemption of a villain inside of LILO & STITCH, those are the things that keep you going when you’re tired.”
Disney announced the sequel last month with a video posted to Instagram, In the video, Stitch drives a little pink Range Rover through Disney Studios lot, pulls up to Stage “2” and says “Get ready!”
The caption reads, “Should’ve known he couldn’t keep a secret. A 626 day surprise: #LiloAndStitch 2 is now in development!”
People in the comment section expressed their excitement.
“You’ve just made one of the best days of the year even better in announcing this,” one fan said.
Another person added, “can’t wait for more FLUFFY CHAOS 💙”
Movieguide® rated the first live-action LILO & STITCH a +1 for content. Part of the review reads:
The live action LILO & STITCH is lots of fun, with touching moments of rescue and redemption. Sometimes, however, the comical action is awkwardly shot. Eventually, Lilo’s love and devotion change Stitch’s heart, allowing him to feel love and want to be part of her family. Lilo won’t quit loving Stitch no matter how much trouble he causes. The live action LILO & STITCH has lots of comical action violence, however, and very brief light foul language. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.
