SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY Gets Fall Release Date
By Movieguide® Contributor
A special documentary about the life of SUPERMAN actor Christopher Reeve is set to release this fall.
The film, titled SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY, “documents Reeve’s ascent to superstardom as Superman, as well as his fight to find a cure for spinal cord injuries after he became a quadriplegic following a horse-riding accident. He used a wheelchair and ventilator for the rest of his life; he died in 2004,” according to Variety.
The film is a collaboration between Warner Bros Discovery and Fathom Events and will release for two days only on Sept. 21 and 25.
“On behalf of not only Warner Bros., but also my colleagues at DC, HBO and CNN, it’s an honor to be a part of bringing Christopher Reeve and his singular legacy to audiences again,” Jeff Goldstein, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, said. “It was at this very studio where he made us all believe a man could fly, and this documentary reveals what made him a true hero, on- and off-screen.”
IGN notes, “Obviously, WB is a fitting home for the documentary, given that the studio is not only the current home of DC Studios, but also where Reeve and director Richard Donner found success with their SUPERMAN films.”
Movieguide® previously reported on the upcoming release:
“All three of Reeve’s children, Matthew and Alexandra with Gae Exton, and Will with wife Dana Reeve, participated in the documentary, which shares incredible new details and behind-the-scenes footage from Reeve’s life,” Fox News reported.
“With 2024 being the 20-year anniversary of our father’s death, that felt like the right time to reintroduce him and his heroic story to the world,” Will Reeve said. “…Everything came together in a way that we knew as a family we could be open and honest and vulnerable and hand everything over to them and see what they came back with. And that trust has been rewarded in a way that we’re just so thrilled about and can’t wait for the world to experience as well.”
“Everyone knows that Superman is a superhero, but I’m eager for audiences to discover the real superhero behind Superman,” said Fathom Events CEO Ray Nutt. “This film is an extraordinary story that takes a deep dive into the man Christopher Reeve really was and the courage he displayed. We’re looking forward to working with our partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. to bring this inspiring film to theatres nationwide.”
