CNN Loses Viewers as Scandal, Unfiltered Bias Plague Network

By Movieguide® Contributor

CNN has took a major nosedive in viewership, losing about 90% of their audience in the last year. The network averaged only 548,000 viewers the week of January 3. For comparison, they had 2.7 million viewers during the same week in 2021, according to a new report.

Meanwhile, Fox News is topping the charts in every category, from daytime to primetime. In the same week CNN had just over a half million viewers, Fox News had an audience of 1.4 million.

Many media analysts think the network’s many scandals are to blame for the rating drop. Anchors Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo made headlines over the last few years; Lemon for journalistic malpractice and an assault allegation, and Cuomo for his hand in covering up his brother former Governor Andrew Cuomo’s own assault allegations.

Both have also publicly challenged Christianity on air.

As Movieguide® previously reported:

CNN’s Chris Cuomo ended a recent program telling viewers that America doesn’t need God; that what we need is within us.

“If you believe in one another and if do the right thing for yourself and your community, things will get better in this country. You don’t need help from above. It’s within us,” he said while pointing a finger to the sky. …

Cuomo, who claims to be Catholic, is the brother to New York governor Andrew Cuomo. Andrew Cuomo, early on in the coronavirus pandemic, said that, “God did not do that [bring the numbers down]. Faith did not do that. Destiny did not do that. A lot of pain and suffering did that . . . That’s how it works.”

And for Lemon:

CNN’s Don Lemon said on air that Jesus Christ was not perfect when He walked on Earth.

“Jesus Christ — if that’s who you believe in, Jesus Christ — admittedly was not perfect when he was here on this earth,” said Lemon. “So why are we deifying the founders of this country?”

Additionally, CNN senior producer John Griffin has been arrested by the FBI on charges involving sex crimes with minors.

“Given the sheer number of public sexual misconduct allegations – from harassment and child sexual violence to abusing one’s journalistic credentials to try to silence women who have made allegations – it’s fair to ask whether these are indicative of a broader cultural rot at the network that’s being papered over as they focus on other priorities,” journalist Drew Holden told Fox News last month.

Media critic Jeffrey McCall agreed, alleging that [CNN President Jeff] Zucker was “responsible for the culture in which underlings felt these misjudgments were ok.”

Chris Cuomo’s spokesperson said, “Aside from the string of professional missteps, it would seem Zucker should at least shoulder responsibility for the cratering ratings of this once-proud news organization,’ he said. ‘The ratings struggles alone at this channel should cause concern in the upper hierarchy of CNN’s parent company.”

In 2020, watchdog group Project Veritas exposed Zucker’s rampant bias against conservatism.

Movieguide® reported:

Most recently, audiotapes revealed that CNN’s President Jeff Zucker attacked President Donald Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani due to Giuliani’s involvement in the Hunter Biden email controversy.

Zucker and CNN Political Director David Chalian discussed how the news organization could avoid The New York Post’s story, which uncovered Hunter Biden’s questionable foreign business dealings before and after his father, Joe Biden, was in office as vice president.

Two days after the Post published the Hunter Biden story, Zucker targeted Giuliani.

Giuliani’s lawyer originally obtained a copy of Biden’s laptop hard drive and later shared its contents with the press.

“There is a term for what Rudy Giuliani is suspected of being, which is ‘useful idiot,’” Zucker said on the monitored conference call. “On the Rudy Giuliani story, this is a really important story. It gets tied to the Hunter Biden disinformation campaign. That’s the way we do this because it’s all tied and part-and-parcel of one.

Zuker then joked that Giuliani had gone “from ‘America’s mayor’,” which referred to Giuliani’s nickname after the events of 9/11, “to ‘useful idiot’.”

It seems that news consumers have had enough of CNN, and are looking for their news elsewhere.

In addition to dominating CNN in the ratings, Fox also outranked MSNBC and ESPN, finishing 2021 as the most-watched basic cable network.
